Commercial cattle listings on AuctionsPlus slipped to 10,869 head, with clearance improving to 43 percent, up 12pc on last week.
The 200-280kg weight category for both steers and heifers performed well this week, posting substantial gains.
Positive signs in export markets may suggest that the market is finding an equilibrium between supply and demand at a new level of pricing.
There were positive signs in the steer categories this week. Assisted by a smaller offering, three-out-of-four categories saw higher prices.
Steers 200-280kg saw 2327 head catalogued, averaging 406c/kg or $1006/head – up $98 on last week for a 58pc clearance. Prices ranged from 195-512c. A line of 76 Shorthorn steers 10-11 months averaging 272kg from Manilla, NSW, returned $990 or 365c/kg.
Listings of steers 330-400kg decreased to 625 head and averaged 344c or $1234 – up $32 on last week, for a 44pc clearance. Prices ranged from 297-384c/kg. Fifty two Angus steers 10-11 months averaging 339kg from Londrigan, Victoria returned $1280 or 378c/kg, and will travel to a buyer in SA.
Heifers
Results in the heifer categories were mixed this week despite a larger offering. Medium to lighter heifers saw strong price gains, while heavier heifers slipped further.
Heifers 200-280kg registered 1128 head and averaged averaged 331c/kg or $790 – up $42 on last week for a 61pc clearance. Prices ranged from 242-372c. From Flaxley, SA, 22 Angus heifers 9-10 months and averaging 263kg returned $930.
Listings of 330-400kg heifers increased 51pc to 297 head and averaged 258c/kg or $899 – down $240, for a 19pc clearance. Prices ranged from 248-267c. From Booubyjan, Southern Queensland, 15 Limousin x Brahman heifers 18-20 months averaging 345kg returned $895.
Breeding females
Breeding stock lines saw mixed results this week. PTIC heifers and cows went in opposite price directions, while clearances were generally higher than last week, assisted by a smaller offering by 21pc. PTIC heifers registered 1537 head and averaged $1264 – down $200 from last week for a 28pc clearance. Three even lines of 22 Angus PTIC heifers 18-30 months averaging 441kg from Armidale, NSW, returned $1250.
PTIC cows registered 1230 head and averaged $1682 – up $450 on last week for a 33pc clearance. The stronger average was supported by quality, breed and location.
From Barongarook West, Victoria, two even lines of 22 rising four-year-old Angus PTIC cows, joined to Angus bulls and averaging 563kg, returned the top price of $2710 and $2540. Another line from the same vendor made $2490 for Angus PTIC cows averaging 536kg.
