Young Port Alberni artists are using The Grove’s latest art exhibit to explore a number of serious topics through their own original art.
The new exhibit “Grads at the Grove” opened last week and features artwork in a number of different mediums by Grade 12 students at Alberni District Secondary School (ADSS).
But while the artists are young, they don’t shy away from tackling complex topics in their artwork. Alia Adams and Kendall Rozwadowski, for example, collaborated to create a piece of artwork that shows the impacts of humans on the natural world, incorporating plastics and recyclables into their piece.
Chayse Griffith’s painting “Thermal Beauty” explores the theme of body positivity, while Gracie McKean has created a cross stitch piece in support of abortion access.
Leah Hillman’s multimedia artwork expresses her concern about the illiteracy rate and communication, while Kianna Sandri has a piece of graphite artwork that portrays dissociation disorder. Joseph Tsai has multiple pieces on display, made in various mediums.
Other pieces of artwork use glass, fabric, paper and even pottery to explore the themes of self-love, social justice and human connection.
The exhibit is sponsored by the Port Alberni Toy Run, which will be offering cash prizes for first, second and third place, as selected by voting. Visitors will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite piece.
“Grads at the Grove” is on display until June 23. The Grove Art Gallery is located at Harbour Quay (in the old aquarium location) and is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
