Liev Schreiber says he was not contacted to reprise his role as Sabertooth in Logan.
Although X-Men Origins: Wolverine received a predominantly negative response from critics and audiences, there’s no denying that Liev Schreiber delivered a fantastic performance as Logan’s archenemy, Victor Creed/Sabretooth. Despite the limitations of the film’s script, the Ray Donovan star skillfully brought the complex character to life in a portrayal that stood on par with Hugh Jackman‘s performance as Wolverine. Given his impressive turn in the movie, fans have long wondered why Schreiber never returned to reprise the role in any future X-Men films, including Logan, which was intended to be Jackman’s final portrayal as the iconic superhero.
In a recent interview with GQ, Liev Schreiber discussed some of his most notable roles, such as Scream, Ray Donovan, Spotlight, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. When the topic shifted to the latter, Schreiber revealed that his absence in Logan was attributed to not being approached to reprise his role. It is reasonable to assume that this is why he was not involved in any other X-Men movies.
With a laugh, Liev Schreiber stated, “They didn’t ask me.” He went on to express his desire to reprise the role of Victor Creed in a future X-Men film before explaining that he did not perceive the character as integral to the story, specifically in Logan. “It wasn’t part of that narrative,” he said.
Since the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, fans have fervently pleaded for Liev Schreiber to reprise his role as Sabretooth in the X-Men universe, driven by their desire to witness another iconic face-off between him and Wolverine. The enduring appeal lies in the untapped potential and abundant storytelling opportunities that remain for the character. Without a doubt, there’s also ample room for deeper exploration of the complex dynamic shared between Sabretooth and Wolverine.
Although the likelihood of Liev Schreiber returning as Sabretooth in a future X-Men film may seem slim, it is not entirely out of the realm of possibility. Given Hugh Jackman’s upcoming return as Wolverine in Deadpool 3 and the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s penchant for unexpected cameos, there exists a glimmer of hope for Sabretooth to also make an appearance in the film. Needless to say, fans would be thrilled to witness a reunion between Wolverine and Sabretooth in the hotly anticipated threequel.
Even if Liev Schreiber never gets the chance to reprise his role as Sabretooth in the X-Men universe, his career shows no signs of slowing down. Next month, he is set to star in acclaimed director Wes Anderson’s upcoming comedy film Asteroid City. Along with Schreiber, the movie’s star-studded cast includes Scarlett Johansson, Bryan Cranston, Tilda Swinton, Edward Norton, Adrian Brody, Maya Hawke, and Steve Carell.
Liev Schreiber is also set to showcase his talents alongside Nicole Kidman and Dakota Fanning in the highly anticipated miniseries The Perfect Couple, from Jenna Lamia. The intriguing plot revolves around a grand wedding, poised to be a joyous occasion, that swiftly descends into chaos as a shocking discovery of a body in Nantucket Harbor rattles the entire event. As tension mounts, suspicion engulfs each member of the wedding party, creating a gripping narrative that explores the depths of human relationships and the sinister secrets that lie beneath the surface.
