Heavy equipment has returned to a Binghamton park as crews start the latest effort to address ongoing issues with a recently-constructed tennis complex.
Workers are removing the surface of the tennis courts at Recreation Park on the city’s West Side.
Mayor Jared Kraham said experts were retained to take a close look at the persistent drainage problems around the courts in the southwest corner of the park.

The mayor last month said the consultants were examining the surface coating that may have allowed water to leach onto the courts.
Crews from Broome Bituminous Products in Vestal have been milling the surface of the tennis courts as the project to address the issues began.
The surface at the complex was supposed to properly drain and repel water but it hasn’t lived up to the city’s expectations.

Broome Bituminous had been hired as the general contractor to replace the park’s old tennis courts. They were closed in November 2019 and ground was broken for the new courts a few months later.
Kraham has said he wants to ensure that city taxpayers don’t wind up paying more money for the tennis court project because of the problems that have been occurring.
The mayor said he hopes the courts could be open for play by the end of summer.
