Distraught neighbours have recalled hearing harrowing screams from a burning home before a woman’s body was found inside.
Emergency services rushed to the home in Angle Park in Adelaide’s noorth-west at about 2.30pm on Friday where they found the residence engulfed in flames.
Witnesses managed to rescue one woman from the home but another, reported to be her sister was left trapped inside.
The surviving woman was taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital with minor injuries. She is reportedly helping police with inquiries.
Her sister’s remains were tragically found inside the home after Metropolitan Fire Service crews extinguished the fire.
No others were being sought over the matter, police said.
Horrified neighbours said they heard screaming from inside as the fire took hold.
‘I was at my computer and I heard yelling and screaming,’ one resident told Nine News.
‘After that, smoke came inside the house and I thought ‘what the hell is going on?’.’
Neighbour Stasie Leonard raced outside after she smelled smoke and heard a ‘huge bang’.
‘I saw smoke and heard another bang,’ she said. ‘Flames were rushing out the window.’
Other neighbours grabbed their hoses to try to extinguish the blaze.
‘Someone was going: ‘there’s someone still inside’,’ she said.
‘It’s just been chaos, it’s been horrible.’
‘One of the people were in there (the police van) just screaming. It’s tragic.’
The Metropolitan Fire Service believes the fire started in the front room of the house, the ABC reports.
‘On arrival, 14 firefighters from three fire trucks and a command vehicle found a fire in the front room,’ an MFS spokeswoman said.
‘[It] took 20 minutes to bring the fire under control, and another 20 minutes to extinguish the blaze.’
The cause of the fire is still unknown but the cost of damage is estimated at $100,000.
