Playing at Deni’s Rotary Park, coach Joe Gogarty said it was a “very satisfying result” after early signs of “poor discipline”.
“We gave them a lot of penalties, which turned over a lot of possession.
“You need to keep possession for longer times in the game, which obviously creates pressure on the defending team.
“Half time discussions seemed to iron out many of the first half issues and we came home with a strong win.”
Final score: Deni Drovers 29 def Griffith 5.
The Drovers are on the road to Wagga City tomorrow, and will welcome strong back rower Jesse Toduadua back into the fold.
“We know that we can defend against big sides and that will be key on Saturday,” Gogarty said.
“Training will be focussed on getting our set piece, scrums and lineouts working better.
“Wagga City were last year’s premiers and have gone undefeated this season so far.
“They have some big, powerful runners and have a very good scrum.
“They are very good across the paddock and have by far the most player numbers of any SIRU clubs.
“We just have to be consistent, defend well, take them on up front and kick for territory well. The whole squad will have to play well and support each other for 80 minutes
“One thing our team does not lack is confidence and commitment, so if we get off to a good start and back ourself anything could happen.”
