A group of Chautauqua Lake Central School students recently represented Chautauqua County at the state Envirothon Competition at Hobart and William Smith College.
Each year, the Chautauqua County Soil and Water Conservation District hosts the Envirothon Competition, which allows students to compete against other schools from across the county in several events related to natural resource science.
The winners represent Chautauqua County at the state competition where the winning team competes against other schools from all over the state.
They will compete in the same events as the county competition, but must also give an oral presentation in front of judges. Chautauqua Lake Team II won the county competition and represented Chautauqua County at Hobart and William Smiths College on May 24 and 25.
Forty-three teams from across New York state competed in environmental science and natural resource management written and oral tests during the two-day competition, with the Chautauqua Lake Team II placing 11th in the state a few points from finishing in the top five.
The team was coached by Mary Jantzi and Jeff Angeletti. Team members are Devin Kelsey, Lincoln Smith, Jonah Reyda, Dayne Jantzi, Chris Lukasiak, Olivia Shearer, and Elias Quintero.
“The annual New York State Envirothon Competition is a critical part of environmental and agricultural education in our state. With the impacts of climate change becoming ever more real, it has never been more inspiring to see these passionate young people preparing to be ambassadors for the environment and our state’s natural resources in years to come. I send my congratulations to the Ulster County winning team and all the participating students on their successes at this year’s competition,” said Richard Ball, state agriculture commissioner.
