Willoughby Kiwanis Club flower sale nearly sold out in an hour – News-Herald

The Willoughby Kiwanis club and Willoughby South High School key club came together May 13 for their annual flower sale event outside Willoughby Middle, 500 Shankland Road.

The yearly sale, a stable in the community for the past 22 years, had lines of cars awaiting the unloading of 175 flower baskets, which were quickly sold out in little over an hour.

“They come every year. Buy six, seven, eight at a time. All the money goes into scholarships. Right back into the schools.” said Ted Clutter, a Kiwanis club organizer.

The Kiwanis club, founded in 1915, is an international organization that participates in service projects that aim at improving children’s lives, being part of 150,000 service projects each year according to their website.

The Willoughby Kiwanis, in addition to its yearly flower sale, has other events for people to attend throughout the year with its spaghetti dinner and Christmas tree lighting.

“We are always looking for more people to join the clubs,” Clutter said. “A lot of leaders started off in key club. Then they moved up to Kiwanis. We hope to teach life skills.”

Those who missed out on the flower sale this year are encouraged to come back next year, but should come early to ensure their pick of the pots.
