SHIPPENSBURG — Saturday morning wasn’t going exactly as Williamsport’s Anyae Grissom had planning. As she was practicing running for the hurdles, something felt off.
That’s because she had to practice with someone else’s spikes because hers somehow went missing. The junior Millionaire has used the same spikes since her freshman year, and had no idea where they got to.
“I was trying to warm up with different spikes, try to get out there and I was just like ‘these aren’t my spikes. They don’t feel right,’” Grissom said with a laugh.
Oh, add in the fact Grissom’s shirt was on backwards and well, it was a little bit of a crazy, hectic morning. But despite those little setbacks and annoyances, Grissom was able to still take home a medal for the Millionaires in the Class AAA 100 hurdles race.
Grissom ran a 16.44 on Saturday to take an eighth-place medal in the Class AAA competition. Oxford’s Macaela Walker ran a 13.94 to win and Susquehannock’s Ryleigh Marks took second in 14.11.
“Today has not been a good day for me. My spikes were missing, my shirt’s on backwards right now, so who knows what’s going on,” Grissom joked. “But I’m happy that I got to be a top-8 medalist.”
While she hoped to be higher on the podium, a state medal regardless was still something Grissom is more than happy with.
“I’m so excited, I’m happy to be a top-8 medalist,” Grissom said. “Overall I’m very proud of myself to make it to the top-8. I was seeded fifth or sixth. I’m sad I couldn’t get up there a little more, but I am very proud of myself.”
Grissom had a PR on Friday in the preliminary race with a time of 14.64.
“I’m so proud of everyone. We all did very well.”
Grissom was the area’s only medalist in the girls Class AAA field on Saturday at Shippensburg. Central Mountain’s Lily Hendricks, who reached the podium on Friday in the triple jump, was just shy of medaling in the long jump on Saturday. Hendricks, a junior, finished with a leap of 17-5 in the first flight, which ended as the 10th leap in the state. She was just 1 1/4 inches from being in the top 8.
Central Mountain’s Abbey Wolfe was a 28th-place finisher in the 3,200 with a time of 11:43.13.
Williamsport’s Ava Matz also competed in the long jump and finished with her best jump of 15-5 1/4.
Williamsport’s Taniyah Martin was hoping to throw into the 110s in the discus after she won District 4 gold, but she finished at states with a best throw of 95-8.
Lewisburg’s Teagan Osunde came close to being in the top 8 as she finished 12th with a throw of 115-7, which she hit on her first mark. Osunde, just a freshman, was the highest placing District 4 competitor in the Class AAA javelin.
