The mercury inched its way to a top of 11.4 degrees at Echuca Aerodrome.
That figure was two degrees below Echuca’s previous coldest day this year of 13.4°C on Friday, May 26.
The wild weather was highlighted by a hailstorm which arrived at 2.45pm.
Hailstones the size of peas caused some damage, with one Moama resident receiving a nasty surprise when he returned to his car.
“My windshield had a hairline crack in it,” the resident told The Riv.
The hailstorm was preceded by a solid downpour, with 5.2mm recorded in the 24 hours to 9am Tuesday.
Tuesday also featured a frosty start, with Echuca’s low recorded at -1.0°C.
It was easily our coldest minimum of the month, but not of the year, with -1.8°C on Tuesday, May 23, still holding that mantle.
The conditions are a result of a cold front sweeping south-eastern Australia.
It powered through Victoria on Monday, having crossed over Tasmania and parts of South Australia overnight.
Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Angus Hines said the cold front would mark a sustained period of winter weather for Victoria and NSW.
“One cold front has moved across the south-east of the country, with the second lying in wait,” Mr Hines said.
“It also kicks off a run of cool, frosty mornings and we’ll have dry, cool conditions in Victoria on Wednesday.
“But rain will move across from South Australia and the lower Northern Territory to the eastern states on Thursday, with a wet day predicted in Victoria and NSW.
“Another (cold) front is lying in wait to the south and ready to move across this weekend.”
Echuca-Moama’s forecast for Wednesday for partly cloudy conditions and a top of 11°C follows another predicted sub-zero temperature overnight.
Showers are increasing on Thursday, with a minimum of 3°C followed by a predicted maximum of 11°C.
The BOM is predicting rainfall between 2mm and 9mm.
A shower or two is forecast on Friday, with up to 2mm expected and temperatures ranging from a minimum of 5°C to a top of 12°C.
Despite the second cold front arriving at the weekend, slightly warmer conditions are expected on Saturday with a top of 14°C forecast.
Clear conditions are tipped on Sunday and a high of 15°C is predicted.
