A jailed Gold Coast wife killer, who is serving a life sentence behind bars, is facing delays in his fraud trial. Find out what happened in court
Andrew Cobby is facing trial on 11 fraud charges (dishonestly obtain property from another), two charges of forgery/uttering and two charges of utter forged documents.
The trial is expected to take at least five days.
During a hearing review on Friday, the Southport Magistrates Court was told witnesses in the murder trial being appealed were also involved in the fraud allegations.
Cobby is appealing his life sentence after being found guilty in November 2021 of murdering his estranged wife Kym.
The appeal is yet to be heard.
Cobby, who appeared in court self-represented via videolink from prison, said the grounds of the appeal had “no relevance” to the witnesses in the alleged fraud matters.
“Your honour, I would submit they are two completely separate matters,” he said.
“There is no reason why the hearing of the (alleged) fraud matters cannot proceed prior to the hearing of the appeal.”
Magistrate Louisa Pink disagreed, saying she accepted they were linked.
She adjourned the matter for a further trial hearing review on September 19.
Cobby will remain behind bars.
