Ascot Gold Cup Trends to Help You Find The 2023 Winner
The Ascot Gold Cup is often billed as the showcase race Royal Ascot each year as the best staying flat horses around slog it out over a gruelling 2m4f trip.
It’s a race that favourites like Yeats (4 wins) and Stradivarius (3 wins) grabbed the affection of the racing public with multiple wins this century, while it’s also a contest that’s been kind to trainer Aidan O’Brien and jockey Frankie Dettori – who both have 8 wins (and counting) to their names.
12 months ago, it was O’Brien again as his Kyprios got the better of a sustained battle with Mojo Star and three-time winner Stradivarius (watch below) – however, he’s not entered this year so we could see a new name on the Ascot Gold Cup roll of honour.
Coltrane landed the Ascot Stakes over this trip at the Royal Meeting 12 months ago and has been popular in the betting, along with last year’s St Leger winner Eldar Eldarov. We could also see the 2021 Gold Cup winner Subjectivist back to try and wrestle back his title, while Aidan O’Brien could pin his hopes on Emily Dickinson and/or 2022 Hardwicke Stakes winner Broome.
Let’s take a look at the key Ascot Gold Cup 2023 trends to look out for – hopefully by applying these to the final runners it will help point you in the direction of the winner.
What Date & Time Is The 2023 Ascot Gold Cup?
📅Time/Date: 4:20pm (Thursday 22nd June 2023)
🏇Racecourse: Ascot
💰 Winner: £283,550,650
📺 TV: Sky Sports Racing / ITV
🎲 Odds: Coltrane 3/1 | Eldar Eldarov 3/1 | Emily Dickinson 13/2 | Subjectivist 10/1
Look For Ascot Gold Cup Runners That Have Raced No More Than Twice That Season
First up is to look for lightly raced horses this season. This is because a massive 19 of the last 21 winners had raced no more than twice that term, with 86% running just 1-2 times that season. Again, backed up with last year’s Ascot Gold Cup winner Kyprios, who has just 2 outings in 2022 before landing gold.
91% Of The Last 21 Ascot Cup Winners Were Aged 6 or Younger
Age has been an important factor when trying to find the Ascot Gold Cup winner too and overall it’s the slightly younger legs that have held sway.
A huge 91% of winners since 2002 were aged 6 or younger, with just the mighty Yeats, who won the Gold Cup as a 7 and 8 year-old, defying this stat.
Respect 4 Year-Olds In The Ascot Gold Cup
We can take the age stat a bit further too as it’s been the 4 year-olds that have dominated in recent years. Since 2012 (11 runnings) we’ve seen 8 winning 4 year-olds (73%), including last year’s winner Kyprios. This year’s 4 year-olds that are fancied in the betting are Eldar Eldarov, Emily Dickinson and Courage Mon Ami.
Winning Form Over 2m+ Is A Plus
The Ascot Gold Cup is run over a trip of 2m4f – which is one of the longest flat races on the calendar. Therefore, it goes without saying having proven stamina is a huge help and this is backed up with 17 of the last 21 winners having won over at least 2m in the past.
Yes, last year’s winner Kyprios broke this trend as the furthest he’d gone before winning the Gold Cup was 1m6f. However, Aidan O’Brien seems to be a slight exception to this stat – as a lot of his Galileo colts, like Yeats and Order Of St George have stepped up to 2m+ for the first time and been successful.
The Ascot Gold Cup Has Been A Great Race For Favourite Backers
It’s a race that punters have been bashing the bookies in recent times too, with a massive 57% of the last 21 favourites winning. We’ve also seen 16 of the last 21 market leaders placed – so even if the jollies aren’t hitting the bullseye they are not far off the mark.
Kyprios was another winning favourite last year (13/8) and since 2013 we’ve now had 7 market leaders win (1 join fav).
88% Of The Last 21 Winners Returned 7/1 Or Shorter In The Betting
The previous ‘favourites trend’ is further supported by the fact that 88% of the last 21 Ascot Gold Cup winners returning 7/1 or shorter in the betting. In fact, in the last 10 runnings, only the 12/1 winner Trip To Paris in 2015 has defied this price stat.

59% Of The Last 10 Winners Came From Stalls 5 or Lower
Despite being run over 2m4f, it’s slightly surprising that the draw has played a small part in finding the winner – maybe a lower draw has helped horses save ground and energy over this longer trip?
Anyway, this is supported with 10 of the last 17 winners coming from stalls 1-5 in recent years – while the last 6 winners hailed from stalls 7 or lower. We’ll know the draw 48 hours before the race on Thursday 22nd June.
Irish Trained Horses Have A Top Ascot Gold Cup Record
The luck of the Irish has certainly been out in force with the Ascot Gold Cup too, with 9 winners since 2022, so any horses than come over from the Emerald Isle should be respected.
Since 1999, Dermot Weld (1), John Oxx (1) and Aidan O’Brien (8) have won the Ascot Gold Cup for Ireland.
Look For Last Time Out Winners In The Ascot Gold Cup
Next up is to look for horses coming into the Ascot Gold Cup off the back of a win. 16 of the last 21 winners had winning form before heading to Ascot, including last year’s winner again Kyprios.

Proven Group One Winning Form Can Help
With the Ascot Gold Cup being a race at the highest level (Group One), then proven form in this grade is another thing to look for. Yes, this didn’t apply to last year’s winner Kyprios, who had only won at Group 3 and Listed level, but with 67% of successful horses since 2002 already G1 winners it’s still a stat to have onside.
Aidan O’Brien Is Mr Ascot Gold Cup
The good record of Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien has been touched on already – he’s won the Royal Ascot showcase race a massive 8 times and is the winning most trainer in the history of the race.
His first win came in 2006 with Yeats, who quickly mopped up four on the bounce. Fame And Glory (2011), Leading Light (2014), Order Of St George (2016) and last year Kyprios (2022) have been his other successes in the race.
Also Note John Gosden & Johnston Trained Runners and Any Owned By Godolphin
Away from O’Brien, trainer John Gosden has won the Ascot Gold Cup 3 times in the last 5 years – all with Stradivarius, while the Mark Johnston yard have won the prize 4 times between 1995 and 2021 – he’s handed over the reins to son Charlie now so could the 2021 winner Subjectivist get him his first win?
We also must respect any Godolphin-owned runners as the ‘boys in blue’ have landed the race four times in the past and could have Yibir in the contest in 2023.
Frankie Dettori Has Won The Ascot Gold Cup 8 Times
In terms of jockeys still riding, Frankie Dettori is the man when it comes to winning the Ascot Gold Cup. The popular Italian horse pilot has won the race 8 times before and with this being his last season in the saddle he’ll be looking to go out on a high. Dettori’s first Gold Cup winner came on Drum Taps in 1992, with his most recent Stradivarius in 2020.
Frankie’s Gold Cup ride could be the Gosden runner Courage Mon Ami, but that’s not confirmed yet.
Ryan Moore Is Another Jockey To Note
With over 70 Royal Ascot wins, another jockey to have on your radar is Ryan Moore. He’s ridden the winner of the Ascot Gold Cup three times since 2013, with his first a notable success on the Queen’s Estimate in 2013.
Moore also won the Gold Cup last year on Kyprios and will, once again, have the pick of the main Aidan O’Brien runners, with Emily Dickinson looking his most likely option.
Respect Past Winners Of The Ascot Gold Cup
Finally, the Ascot Gold Cup has had a habit of throwing up previous winners of the race.
Since 1949, we’ve seen 15 multiple winners of the Ascot Gold Cup – with the most recent being Stradivarius, who won three between 2018 and 2020.
Yes, last year’s winner Kyprios doesn’t run this year, but we could have the 2021 hero Subjectivist. If running this Charlie Johnston runner will be looking to become the first Ascot Gold Cup horse won regain his title since Kayf Tara, who won the race in 1998 and 2000.
