Sky News host Laura Jayes has questioned NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb on the circumstances that would lead to a 95-year-old woman being tasered by police at an aged care facility.
Clare Nowland has been on life support since being admitted to Cooma District Hospital following the incident at Yallambee Lodge on Wednesday.
“Do we really need an investigation to tell us that this 95-year-old woman with dementia using a walking frame shouldn’t have been tasered? What circumstances would that be okay? Would there be any?” Ms Jayes asked the commissioner.
Staff at the aged care facility called authorities to the address after finding Ms Nowland holding a steak knife and standing with her walking frame at 4am.
The commissioner was questioned if the officer who tasered Ms Nowland “panicked” and why an officer would go into a nursing home with a taser in the first place.
“It goes to the question of why and I don’t have the answers right now and I’m as keen as the community of New South Wales, Australia to find that out,” Ms Webb told Sky News Australia.
“But we can’t rush that, I can’t interfere in that investigation, and it would be improper for me to add pressure to the investigators to get those answers.”
