Ahead of the Sixth International Human Rights Lecture at the Mary Robinson Centre on June 12th next, Mary Robinson and invited speaker Ernesto Zedillo, former President of Mexico, met last week with their fellow members of The Elders in South Korea.
A statement issued after that meeting highlighted the risks associated with the rise in Artificial Intelligence (AI), urging world leaders to collaborate on designing a governance system to ensure technological advances in this area are for the benefit of all, and to protect against the heightened risk that uncontrolled AI could lead to potential global security, nuclear threat and bio-engineered health risks.
Speaking on the issue, Mary Robinson, Chair of the Elders, said: ‘World leaders have a responsibility to ensure that AI is used in ways that are safe, transparent and accountable. These are not just technological or commercial issues, but political and moral imperatives affecting everyone.”
The Elders also reiterated the importance of intergenerational dialogue and collaboration in addressing the global challenges of today, acknowledging that younger generations often have greater knowledge of technology and have a great deal of insight to bring to these conversations.
Issues such as globalisation, the climate crisis and the opportunity presented by intergenerational exchange will form key themes of the upcoming International Human Rights Lecture, taking place in Ballina Arts Centre on June 12th next at 2pm. Admission is free, but advance booking is essential. Booking at www.maryrobinsoncentre.ie.
