The Eagles’ 70-point loss to Gold Coast could be the straw that breaks the back of some supporters as they tee off at the club on social media.
The fans have cooled little after sleeping on West Coast’s worst-ever loss to the Suns and were provoked into action by the club’s “sugarcoating”.
The Eagles faithful have endured 32 losses in their past 35 games, with an average losing margin above 40 points.
But fan Malcolm Richmond took to Facebook to say Friday night’s thumping was the worst of the lot.
“Every time I think it can’t get any worse, you guys manage to prove me wrong. Seriously, thrashed at home by a club from a rugby state, 20 less scoring shots, and they even kicked more points than we had scoring shots. The lack of intensity and effort in the 2nd and last quarters was embarrassing. We have become the laughing stock of the AFL,” he wrote.
To make matters worse, the post came on the club’s match report that was hit on Facebook headlined “Red-hot Suns overrun by depleted Eagles”.
Rob Didcoe called for more honesty from the club.
“Classic understatement, suggest being a bit more honest would be good for the fans to see and hear,” he wrote.
Another fan took aim at the club’s management, saying they had become complacent because of financial success.
“At the end of the day, the Eagles are a successful business irrespective of how they perform on the field, and it shows. Everyone keeps their job and their spot regardless of performance. When the same CEO has been there for decades, that complacency filters down through the organisation and will stay there until there is a change.”
Fans also didn’t hold back during the game as the club attempted to pump up top rookie Reuben Ginbey’s 16-tackle performance.
“Embarrassing this tweet, we are getting pumped by a team that probably shouldn’t even still be in the comp, and you a tweeting tackle numbers, this club has totally lost it,” Hayden Rattas wrote.
