ARIA award-winning alternative rock band Grinspoon have set their sights on a coveted spot at the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games, but they don’t just want a gig for the night.
Grinspoon, Jessica Mauboy and Illy were among the acts who performed at Fire Fight Australia.
“We wouldn’t say no to performing at the 2032 Olympics. It would be an honour,” frontman Phil Jamieson said.
“I would curate the hell out of that Brisbane Olympics show. If we were asked obviously I’d be honoured.”
Jamieson also noted his enthusiasm for other Brisbane acts, suggesting the city’s rich musical history should be a focus of the event.
“I’ve got some Brisbane acts I would like to put forward before us just to be selfless,” he said.
“There’s so much great stuff that you guys have as a city and as a musical identity city, like Ball Park Music, Regurgitator, DZ Deathrays, there’s thousands of them.”
This enticing possibility comes as Grinspoon, who formed in 1995, announced a new Australian tour starting in Hobart on November 3 and making its way to Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall in Fortitude Valley on November 10.
The tour is set to coincide with the first-ever release of the alternative rock band’s classic albums ‘Easy’ and ‘New Detention’, on vinyl on September 8.
“There’s an overwhelming sense of gratitude to even do this. When I was listening back to the albums, I thought ‘this is a really special thing’,” Jamieson shared, expressing his affection for the aforementioned records.
The tour promises fans a selection of deep cuts from both albums, along with some exciting stage elements and support acts.
The Brisbane gig location holds a special place in Jamieson’s heart, evident as he named Brisbane as his favourite city to perform in, and Fortitude Valley Music Hall as his top venue.
“I really, really, really really love Hobart, but I’m gonna have to go with Brisbane as my favourite city, and Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley Music Hall was my favourite venue,” he said.
“We’ve been playing in that city for so many years and to come back and do a show there again, it’s gonna be great.”
As Grinspoon celebrates more than two decades in the music scene, the frontman acknowledges their enduring popularity and the joy of playing live.
“It feels amazing that we’re all still the same four people that started this band when I was 17,” said Jamieson.
“It’s a gift.”
Tickets for Grinspoon’s Brisbane show are available from ticketmaster.com.au from June 2.
