Kenya’s referee Peter Waweru will be on Video Assistant Referee (VAR) duties when Tanzania’s Yanga faces Algeria’s USM Algiers in the first leg of the Caf Confederation Cup final on May 28 at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.
Waweru, the only Kenyan Fifa-accredited VAR official, recently officiated the first leg of the Caf Champions League semifinal featuring Tunisia’s Esperance and Al Ahly from Egypt.
He will be assisted by Akhona Zennith from South Africa and Sudan’s Mohammed Abdallah.
Waweru has officiated several Fifa tournaments among them; Afcon under-20 in 2019, Afcon 2019 in Egypt and the 2019 under-17 World Cup in Brazil.
Others are the 2021 Chan where he officiated the final and the Afcon 2021 in Cameroon where he took charge of the group ‘C’ fixture between Comoros and Gabon.
Waweru was voted the best referee in the 2020/2021 FKFPL season.
He is also a Pure and Applied Mathematics lecturer at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
Last month Waweru and compatriot Gilbert Cheruiyot attended a five-day Elite Referees’ course organized by Caf in Egypt.
The match will be officiated by DR Congo’s Jean-Jacques Ngambo as the center referee. Olivier Kabene and Zakhele Thusi will be the assistants while Ahmad Imtehaz will serve as the fourth official.
