Volunteers from the Villages of Five Points Butterfly Club will hold a plant and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, May 20. The rain date is Saturday, June 3. The sale will take place in the parking lot by the community playground near the corner of Old Orchard and W. Edgemoor roads in Lewes.
Items for sale will include milkweed for the endangered monarch butterfly and flowering plants that attract butterflies of all kinds. Purchases can be made with cash or credit card. Homemade baked goods such as cookies, brownies, and small breads and cakes will also be available for purchase.
Children can participate in activities such as cornhole, hopscotch and bubble blowing.
Proceeds benefit the Villages of Five Points Butterfly Club, which establishes and maintains milkweed and other plants that support butterflies.
Adjacent to the sale site is the butterfly nursery the group established with host plants on which butterflies such as swallowtails and monarchs can lay their eggs. The nursery is part of a larger initiative within the Villages of Five Points to create areas that will attract and support butterflies, especially the endangered monarchs, with pollinator and host plants. Organizers plan to expand these areas over time to beautify the community and help bring back the monarchs.
Immediately following the sale, a vintage baseball game will take place in the nearby recreation field. The Lewes Base Ball Club will take the field at 12 p.m. to play against the Diamond State Base Ball Club of Delaware using 1864 rules. For more information, go to lewesbaseball.org.
