This week, there’ll be a few Victorian landmarks light up after dark, all in the name of keeping the state’s roads safe.
Mooroopna Water Tower, Monash Park Tree in Shepparton, the Archie Graham Building in Warrnambool, Malop and Moorabool Street in Central Geelong and Melbourne’s Bolte Bridge, Flinders Street Station and CityLink Sound Tube will all glow yellow this week.
The golden glow is designed to draw attention to the damage road trauma does on all those involved in crashes and accidents, included the injured themselves, their families and the communities they live in.
Already this year 116 people have died on Victorian roads – 30 more than the same time in 2022.
Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne says that this week, National Road Safety Week, is an opportune time to reminder road users of the need to take care.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility, and we need all Victorians to play their part in keeping our roads safe,” Horne says.
“This National Road Safety Week will see several iconic landmarks across Victoria illuminated yellow in memory of those who have tragically lost their lives on the state’s roads and support those that have been impacted by road trauma.”
The key messages for motorists this year are about planning ahead, driving to the conditions, avoiding distractions, and taking regular breaks.
Under the Victorian Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030, the State Government is working across education, infrastructure, policy and technology to improve safety for road users.
The Strategy aims to halve road deaths and reduce serious injuries by 2030 and sets the state on a path to zero road deaths by 2050.
Part of that process is a partnership with the Federal government and the Transport Accident Commission to roll out vital safety upgrades as part of the $457.57 million Road Safety Program.
The upgrades are being delivered at almost 200 sites and routes on regional, urban and peri-urban roads and include intersection upgrades, pedestrian crossings, electronic speed limit signage, rumble strip line marking, safety barriers and shoulder sealing works.
