King’s Birthday Monday provides a set of high-stakes Chatham Cup ties for northern football fans, with some big clubs set to bow out.
The second-round draw pits some of Auckland’s top clubs against each, ensuring there’ll be absences when the draw for the last 32 is made later in the week.
On Monday, fifteen teams will join the winners from ties played earlier over the long weekend.
Here are the games to follow, all of Monday’s fixtures, and our round-up of the results so far …
Auckland United v Auckland City
Keith Hay Park, Mt Roskill, 3pm
This Monday match ensures one of the Northern League’s top four sides will exit the competition in their first outing (as they both got first-round byes).
Auckland United go into the game only 48 hours after beating Takapuna 4-3 in a league fixture.
In Saturday’s game, Josh Redfearn led the way with a hat-trick and United were leading 4-0 with only 15 minutes to go.
Coach Jose Figuero won’t be happy that United conceded three goals late, and he’ll be keen to topple his former club, Auckland City, in the cup.
Auckland City beat Western Springs 3-1 on Friday night, giving them a longer recovery period than their crosstown rivals.
Skipper Cam Howieson was missing on Friday, possibly indicating he needed the chance to freshen after his fine performances at the OFC Champions League.
City coach Albert Riera told the club’s website: “Hopefully, we can bring some fresh legs, and our guys can recover well; we have a few guys who have been struggling a little bit lately, but we have a training on Sunday and back on Monday.”
Manurewa v Eastern Suburbs
Manurewa War Memorial Park, Manurewa, 2pm
Two clubs with proud records in the Chatham Cup meet in Manurewa for this clash between two of the Northern League’s top sides.
Manurewa’s league form took a shake on Saturday when they lost 3-1 at home to Birkenhead United, who scored twice in the last five minutes.
Rewa’s goal was scored by former All White Monty Patterson, back in the side after a troublesome injury.
Eastern Suburbs scraped home 2-1 against Melville United in Saturday’s Northern League match, with both goals coming in stoppage time.
Maybe these results indicate Manurewa had difficulty seeing out the 90 minutes while Suburbs proved they could go the distance …
Certainly, Suburbs coach Kane Wintersgill hinted on Saturday he would be rotating his squad to get a result in Monday’s cup tie.

Bay Olympic v West Coast Rangers
Olympic Park, New Lynn, 2pm
Neither side managed to win in the Northern League on Saturday, and both would benefit from a cup run to revitalise their seasons.
Rangers, promoted to the Northern League this year, are going the better of the two clubs, but they were beaten 3-2 by Hamilton Wanderers on Saturday.
Olympic got off to a flying start at Manukau United on Saturday with Ibrahim Nadir scoring twice in the opening 10 minutes. They ended up drawing 3-3 with Manukau (who travel to Tauranga City for Monday’s cup round).
Olympic or Rangers? Extra time would not surprise.
East Coast Bays v Western Springs
Bay City Park, Browns Bay, 2pm
This is a potential upset.
Bays are leading the Lotto NRFL Men’s Championship and this is their only fixture of the long weekend.
Springs are backing up after playing Auckland City on Friday night (a 3-1 loss).
Bays must fancy their chances, and come into the tie after beating Mount Albert Ponsonby 6-0 a week ago, and scoring 13 goals in their first round cup tie (against Sunday League side Rapa Nui).
They’ve certainly found scorers to replace promising striker Keegan Kelly, their Golden Boot winner last year who moved to Western Springs over the summer.
Kelly has been missing from the Springs line-up since April.
This game, at the ground that will be the training base for the world champion United States women’s team, could provide a classic cup tie.
Takapuna v Waikato Unicol
Taharoto Park, Takapuna, 2pm
Takapuna have endured a string of ‘nearly’ results this season, coughing up goals at the wrong time or just failing to get up in time.
Saturday was one such game where they clawed their way back from being 4-0 down to Auckland United, and finishing with a 4-3 loss.
They’re bottom of the Northern League.
Waikato Unicol are a young side on the way up. Last season’s WaiBOP Premiership winners are leading this season’s new Lotto NRFL Southern Conference.
Their squad includes players with Lotto NRFL experience at clubs including Cambridge, Claudelands Rovers and Ngaruawahia United.
Unicol had no league fixture this weekend, and they’ll be match-fit.
They’ll have a go, and Takapuna will need to be prepared.
