Country songstress, Raechel Whitchurch explores the reality of long-term love in her new single, Untangled. Drawing inspiration from her relationship with husband Ben, Raechel ruminates on the tumultuous nature of long-term relationships.
“My husband and I have been married for 13 years, and so much of our lives are intertwined,” admits the singer-songwriter. “I wanted to write about what it feels like to go through the normal highs and lows of marriage. Even after a hard day, you still know that there’s no one else you’d rather be tangled up with.”
The single’s swirling production echoes the sentiment of its lyrics, brought together by the hand of multiple Golden Guitar and ARIA winner, Matt Fell in the quiet furrows of the Tasmanian countryside. The go-to producer was crucial to the song’s message.
“When I brought this song to Matt in the studio, there was an extra lyric in the chorus, but I’d never been completely happy with it,” she adds. “Matt made the executive decision to drop it completely and it really changed the way the chorus felt. I am very particular about my lyrics, and Matt is one of the few people that I really trust with helping me make lyrical decisions for my songs.”
The accompanying music video, which premieres today exclusively on Countrytown, sees the singer endlessly pursuing a mysterious rope. It was co-directed by Raechel alongside Wade Blundell from Blacklist Productions. Filmed at Mandagery, NSW, the music video also stars Ben Whitchurch, Savannah Lee, Jarod Lee and Yudi Setiawan.

Raechel says, “The different sets and locations were to represent the different stages of life and love, and the rope was to signify how your relationship becomes tangled up all through these different moments you face together. I really wanted to visually showcase why it’s so painful when couples break up – they aren’t simply leaving each other – they are untangling a lifetime of moments and memories together.”

Untangled follows on from I’m Not Cool, which has spent a whopping 13 weeks (and counting) in the CountryTown Hot 50 airplay charts and is the second taste to be heard from the 2x Golden Guitar nominee since her #1 ARIA Country debut album, Finally Clear. Released in April 2021, it debuted at #1 on the ARIA Australian Country Album Charts and #3 on the AIR Independent Album Charts.
Raechel grew up in regional NSW performing in her family band The Lees. She started playing piano when she was 5, then traded it in at 8 for a mandolin. Guitar and banjo soon followed, and so did the songwriting. In 2016, her debut EP, Outlaw opened at #1 on the Australian Country iTunes charts.
Raechel has toured with Adam Harvey, opened for Fanny Lumsden and Felicity Urquhart & Josh Cunningham, and appeared at festivals like Savannah in the Round, Groundwater Country Music Festival, Gympie Music Muster and Cruisin’ Country.
