The Emus rehearse together and on occasion perform for small audiences with an array of witty, informative songs.
Liz Quinlivan worked for 43 years as a community nurse and always played the piano and banjo, and after moving back to Echuca in 2018 looked to establish a new social group.
“I’ve been playing the banjo and piano for many years and wanted to establish a group for people aged in their 50s and 60s, where like-minded musicians can perform different styles of music,” Mrs Quinlivan said.
“We love to perform the Emu Rock, instead of the famous Eagle Rock by Daddy Cool.
“No matter what type of instrument you play, everyone with an instrument is welcome to join us and play along.”
Maryann Jenkins is another member of the group.
“There are about 12 people in the group at present and all have enjoyed performing on St Patrick’s Day, and for Echuca Community for the Aged at Wharparilla and at the Colbinabbin Picnic and Wine Festival,” she said.
The Emus are always on the lookout for more people to join them.
“I realised what a great social benefit it is to play and sing as a group. It provides a sense of wellbeing and fun,” Mrs Quinlivan said.
“The ukulele is an easy instrument to learn, and several songs can be played with only a few chords.
“The Royal Hotel has generously allowed us to practise on a Sunday afternoon if they are not too busy, and we welcome others to join our group if they would like to learn or play and sing along.
“Currently, we are learning some blues music to get in the spirit for the upcoming Winter Blues Festival.”
