The landscape of the UFC women’s bantamweight and men’s lightweight divisions will change at UFC 289. Amanda Nunes vs. Irene Aldana and Charles Oliveira vs. Beneil Dariush are the main attractions when UFC returns to Rogers Arena in Vancouver on Saturday night.
Aldana looks to follow in the footsteps of fellow Mexicans Brandon Moreno, Alexa Grasso and Yair Rodriguez in winning world championship fights in 2023. The challenger has a tall task ahead of her in the form of two-division champion Nunes, considered by many as the greatest female fighter in mixed martial arts history. They will be flanked by a firecracker of a fight between Oliveira and Dariush. Both men believe a victory will secure them the next title fight against UFC lightweight champ Islam Makhachev.
Oliveira vs. Dariush has Fight of the Night written all over it, but they’ll have healthy competition from their main card contemporaries. What UFC 289 lacks in star power it tries to mend with all-action offerings like Dan Ige vs. Nate Landwehr, Marc-Andre Barriault vs. Eryk Anders and Mike Malott vs. Adam Fugitt.
