A security guard at an inner-city Woolworth’s store and another man have been stabbed in front of horrified witnesses after trying to stop an alleged shoplifter.
The two men are being treated in hospital for non-life threatening injuries after the incident at South Bank, a popular entertainment and tourist precinct on the Brisbane River, about 4pm on Wednesday.
“Initial investigations indicate the two men allegedly approached a third man who they believed had stolen goods from a nearby supermarket,” Queensland Police said in a statement.
“Police will allege a physical altercation occurred between the three men and two men sustained non-life-threatening injuries.”
A 28-year-old Gladstone man has been charged and will appear in court on Thursday.
The first guard was allegedly stabbed in the torso near the supermarket before the alleged shoplifter ran off towards the nearby train station, where the second man was allegedly slashed on the arm.
Queensland Police found the 28-year-old man shortly before 5pm in the nearby suburb of Highgate Hill.
He has been charged with two counts of wounding and one count of possession of a knife in a public place and will appear before Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday.
Two crime scenes have been established at South Bank.
