Earthquakes have rocked residents in two Australian cities overnight, with one tremor described as “unusually powerful”.
A 3.1 magnitude earthquake struck Clarence Valley, New South Wales just after 2am on Thursday.
A 4.3 magnitude earthquake struck about 130 kilometres off the coast of Cairns about 10pm on Wednesday, according to Geosciences Australia.
Earthquakes List Australia described the strength of the quake as “unusually powerful” with tremors felt by many residents in the region.
“The centre of this earthquake had a very shallow depth of 10km,” it said.
“Shallow earthquakes usually have a larger impact than earthquakes deep in the earth.”
There were no risks of tsunamis, it added.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Service reported no injuries or damage.
Earlier, a 3.1 magnitude earthquake struck Clarence Valley, southeast of Grafton, in northern NSW about 2am on Thursday.

Towns or cities near the epicentre of where the quake struck may have felt “very weak shaking”, said Volcano Discovery.
They include Grafton, South Grafton and Coutts Crossing.
There were no reported injuries or damage.
