
Two Bay Area residents claimed crowns in the finals March 4 in the first Miss League City preliminary match against Miss Texas USA and Miss Texas Teen USA.
Hometown contestant Avery Doubenmier, 22, won the title of Miss League City USA and will make a series of appearances heading to the state finals July 14-16 in Houston. Last year’s state winner, R’Bonney Gabriel, representing Friendswood, won Miss USA and Miss Universe 2022.
The teen winner was Carys Moran of Friendswood, who also won Miss Teen Photogenic. It was the first competition for the 18-year-old daughter of Sean and Jennifer Moran of Friendswood.
The final at the South Shore Harbor Hotel and Resort drew a crowd of 400.
The Miss winner is the daughter of Rick and Amy Doubenmier of League City.
Avery Doubenmier, a graduate of Clear Springs High School, was one of three finalists for the Miss Fitness award decided by media personalities on March 3. The other finalists were Mary Sickler and fitness winner Sydney Rice, who placed second in the competition and was named Miss Photogenic.
Miss first runner-up was Camryn Hopkins, followed by Rice, Rachel Goebel and Chloe Simmons.
Jada Foster’s fellow contestants voted her Miss Congeniality.
In second place, in order, were Katelyn Gross and Jordi Frost.
Brynli Felps was the media judges’ choice for Teen fitness, and she was voted Miss Teen Congeniality by her peers.
At $1 per vote, fans at the event participated in the selection of Miss and Teen “People’s Choice” winners, which raised $7,000 for the Dash Gordon Foundation, which focuses on special needs, human trafficking, foster/adoption care, animal rescue, abuse women’s shelters and children, autism and veteran communities.
The People’s Choice winners were Goebel for Miss and Moran for Teen.
Co-host Matt Dougherty, who is the fiance of co-host Nancy Gonzalez, who was Miss Texas USA 2017, had perhaps the best line of the night while interviewing Moran in the question-and-answer segment on stage for the youth finalists. .
First, he asked Moran an icebreaker about what instrument she would like to play. She said, “A fiddle, because I like Charlie Daniels.” Moran then pulled a “serious” question from the fishbowl; Dougherty opened it and asked, as if reading it, “Why did the devil go down to Georgia?”
The city of League City was the largest guarantee sponsor for the preliminary. The head of the city’s convention and visitors bureau, Stephanie Polk, said she hopes the competition will increase tourism and recognition for the community.
The 22 contestants filmed a walking tour of League City’s historic downtown area on March 2. That evening, the contestants were interviewed by four-judge Miss and Teen panels, with these scores counting for one-third of their preliminary points, along with swimsuit and evening. dress on the final night.
After the next day’s Fitness judging, Serendipity Yacht Cruises hosted a VIP Brunch where Andrew Bateman, a guitarist, performed.
