A Houston ISD trustee said some board members plan to confront the Texas Education Agency about the impending state takeover at a meeting in Austin later this month that will be hosted by the Houston Chapter of the NAACP.
“We’ve been in this fight before we even got into office,” Trustee Patricia Allen said of the board. – The board has been working since we were elected. We have a lone governor coach, a TEA program — we’ve tried our best, hired the best superintendent.”

They plan to travel to Austin on March 20 after spring break, although Mayor Sylvester Turner announced last week that he received multiple reports that TEA plans to install a board and a new superintendent as soon as this week.
“If you can’t come to us, we’ll come to you,” Allen said.
TEA has not confirmed or commented on its plans for how it will move forward with HISD.

Other leaders also made promises to get answers. NAACP President Bishop James Dixon said he plans to call a meeting with TEA Commissioner Mike Morath. U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee said she intends to bring the matter to the attention of the Biden administration and the U.S. Department of Education.
