Sydney’s commuters are facing major delays after an over-height truck blocked the entrance to the Harbour Tunnel for the second time in a day.
The Sydney Harbour Tunnel is now running in both directions after traffic controllers managed to block the truck out of the entrance.
Traffic remains heavy along the Warringah Freeway and authorities are advising commuters to allow plenty of time for travel.
Morning commuters were brought to a halt earlier on Tuesday when another oversized truck attempted to enter the tunnel in the same direction just before 8am.
Premier Chris Minns said the increased frequency of trucks blocking the tunnel was “a huge headache for Sydney commuters” and he would be talking to Roads Minister John Graham about it.
“I feel like the communication isn’t getting out to particularly drivers … I’m not sure whether as a result of the skills shortage across Sydney, you’ve got more inexperienced drivers that have bigger loads bigger trucks, and are not understanding how to navigate Sydney’s traffic the way they should,” he said.
“This is happening on a routine basis, it seems to be knocking out the road network every other Monday. That’s intolerable for tens of thousands of commuters.”
The penalty for driving past low clearance signs on NSW tunnels and bridges is $4097 and 12 demerit points.
