Highlights of a busy UCD Irish Milers club meet in at Belfield on Saturday included a win in the men’s A mile for John Travers of Donore Harriers who pushed the pace from the start and finished in 4:02.28.
Second was Neil Johnston of Annadale Striders in 4:05.57 while third in 4:06.47 was Juan Ignacio Pena of Raheny Shamrock AC.
Winning the A 3000m was Pierre Murchan of Dublin City Harriers in 8:09.32. In the women’s A 1500m, Niamh Carr of Dublin City Harriers was first home in 4:20.91.
Clare Fagan of Mullingar Harriers was the winner of the women’s A 3000m in 9:31.07
In a quality men’s A 800m, Cian McPhillips of host club UCD AC competing in only his second outdoor track event of the season was first across the line with a personal best outdoor time of 1:46.94.
McPhillips aiming to return to the sort of form that saw him win the European U20 1500m title two years ago.
Second was South African visitor Boitumelo Masilao in 1:47.99,while third in 1:48.71 was Louis O’Loughlin of Donore Harriers. In all, six broke 1 mins 50 secs. Among them Nick Griggs nwo with the newly formed Candour club.
His time was 1:49.57. Seven men’s 800 races were held, with a large entry from Northern Ireland, which is currently suffering from a lack of suitbale tracks. Winning the women’s 800m in 2:05.0 was Jenna Bromell of Emerald AC. UCD’s Susie Nestor was second in 2:07.63 and Amy O’Donoghue, now with DSD AC, in 2:08.33. Many of these will be competing again in Sundya’s inaugural DSD Games at the St Thomas Campus in the foothills of the Dublin mountains.
Zak Higgins of Donore Harriers won the men’s A 400m in 49.09 secs, while making it a sprint double was prolific racer, Bori Akinola of UCD AC. Akinola won the men’s A 200m into a slight headwind in 21.98 secs and then the 100m, held on the back straight, in 10.38 secs. Second in the 100m was Michael Farrelly of Raheny Shamrock in a personal best 10.65, with Leo Morgan of Clonliffe Harriers third in 10.68. The wind was a just legal +1.8.,
British visitor Katie Head won the women’s hammer with a throw of 66.68. UCD AC’s Nicola Tuthill was second with 65.69.
Harriers’ 5-mile returns
The Fiat Lucan Harriers AC 5 Mile Road Race in association with Fort Motors is back after a very successful event in 2022.
This popular annual event will be held on Sunday, September 3 at 11am and is a flat course including 1 mile along the Grand Canal and finishing with a lap of the Lucan Harriers track.
Runners, Joggers and Walkers are all welcome. There will be pacers to help runners achieve their PB goal and tail walkers to keep the walkers company. The first 500 entrants also receive a top-quality special commemorative T-Shirt and refreshments will be served.
This year we have a new option – a Couch to 5 Mile which includes a weekly coaching session with qualified coaches, guaranteed race entry with T-Shirt and membership of Lucan Harriers AC until the end of 2023.
