Lewis Ferguson is underlining why a number of big hitters want to land the midfielder after becoming the top Scottish scorer in a Serie A season since Denis Law 61 years ago after netting for Bologna.
The likes of Juventus have reportedly taken notice of the Scotland midfielder – and it’s clear to see why after he grabbed his fifth league goal of the season at the weekend as his Bologna side crushed Cremonese 5-1 away from home.
He’s now matched international teammate Aaron Hickey’s achievements of last season at the same club, with the Brentford star also scoring five times in the league.
And if the former Aberdeen ace can score one more goal in Bologna’s two remaining games in Serie A against champions Napoli or away to Lecce, he will become the highest-scoring Scot in Serie A since legend Law scored ten goals for Torino in 1962.
He’s scored more goals than Scotland icon Joe Jordan, who scored in three World Cup Finals in a row, in the top flight of Italian football.
Jordan did score 13 goals in the Italian leagues, but ten of them were for AC Milan when they were relegated to Serie B. He netted two goals for Milan in Serie A and one for Verona in the top flight in one season.
The other two Scots to score in Serie A are Graeme Souness, who scored four league goals in each of his two seasons for Sampdoria before becoming player-manager of Rangers in 1986.
And former Celtic and Hibs midfielder Liam Henderson managed two goals last term for Empoli in Serie A, but hasn’t netted for them this season.
Law scored seven goals in his first nine matches for Torino and eventually scored ten goals, but became frustrated with Italian football and returned to the UK with Manchester United, where he won the Ballon d’Or the following season.
