BENDIGO has been named as one of eight finalists for the Victorian Top Tourism Town in the TAC Victorian Tourism Awards, while municipality partner Heathcote is in the running for the top small-town award.
The awards are run by the Victoria Tourism Industry Council and seek to highlight the towns and rural centres that offer “exceptional and unique visitor experiences”.
This is the third year in a row Bendigo has named a finalist and City of Greater Bendigo’s manager of tourism and major events Terry Karamaloudis urged locals to get behind the awards that are decided by popular vote.
“We are very excited that Bendigo and Heathcote have reached the finals for the third year in a row and are recognised as must-see visitor destinations that deliver amazing and memorable experiences,” he said.
“The final decision is based on public voting, user reviews, suggested itineraries, so it means so much for Bendigo and Heathcote to be recognised in this way.
“We have an incredibly enthusiastic tourism sector, including those in attractions, accommodation and hospitality who are very welcoming and offer unique experiences for people of all ages and interests.
“To be named the top regional or small regional town, you, your family and friends are encouraged to vote.
“So, vote 1 for Bendigo and Heathcote today.”
VTIC chief executive Felicia Mariani said the awards highlight what’s great about the state.
“The last few years have shown many of us that we don’t need to leave Victoria for a great getaway,” she said. “It’s renewed our love for our stunning backyard.
“The awards showcase the value of tourism to our towns and communities and celebrate the diversity of our regional destinations.
Bendigo will battle it out with Ballarat, Echuca, Frankston, Lakes Entrance, Mildura, Warrnambool and Werribee in the Top Tourism Towns category.
Heathcote is up against Koroit, Sorrento and Woodend for the title of Top Small Tourism Town.
Visit vtic.com.au/toptourismtown to vote before Thursday 22 June and prizes for taking part are being offered.
