Kamaku started to officiate football matches in 2011.
Kenyan referee Peter Waweru Kamaku has been appointed as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup final match between Yanga (Tanzania) and USM Alger of Algeria, which is set to take place on Sunday, May 28, 2023, at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
Kamaku will work alongside a team of officials, including Zenith Makarima from South Africa as Assistant 1 and Mohamed Abdallah Ibrahim from Sudan as Assistant 2.
The Dar es Salaam-based side have first leg advantage heading into the decisive match against the North Africans
DR Congo’s Jean-Jacques Ngambo as the center referee will be assisted by his countryman Olivier Kabene and South Africa’s Zakhele Thusi. At the same time, Ahmad Imtehaz will serve as the fourth official.
It will be Kamaku’s second assignment this month in the CAF competitions, having officiated the first leg of the CAF Champions League semifinal between Esperance de Tunis and Al Ahly as the center referee.
The Tanzanian giants outclassed their penultimate opponents by picking up a 4-1 aggregate win.
The 40-year-old arbitrator has experience as a VAR referee, having served at the 2022 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) held in Algeria.
Kamaku has also enjoyed the privilege of handling several Caf Champions League games; Confederation Cup matches, and Fifa World Cup qualifying matches since 2017.
The arbitrator has accrued 15 years of experience officiating in the local scene.
A mathematics lecturer at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Kamaku has been a member of the 20 CAF/FIFA Professional Referee pioneer group since 2020.
The match between Yanga and USM Alger is expected to be a nerve-wracking encounter between two top teams.
