Here is this weeks edition of Tips From The Big Bookies.
Matthew Campbell – Betr
DOOMBEN CUP – ZAAKI – Race 7 No.1 (Doomben)
I’m not expecting a repeat of last year’s surprise loss. Gets up to 2000m after just doing enough to win the Hollindale and now third-up, this is his comfort zone.
GOODWOOD – LOFTY STRIKE – Race 8 No.9 (Morphettville)
You have to forgive his run on the bog track in the TJ Smith and go on his two runs in the Oakleigh Plate and Newmarket Handicap. In those races he ran second to Uncommon James and In Secret.
BRC SPRINT – SCALLOPINI – Race 8 No.1 (Doomben)
Coming off a short spell where he won his last two runs impressively at 1400m. Excels when freshened so 1350m is ideal. Is the most versatile runner in the race.
BEST – NAVAJO PEAK – Race 9 No.10 (Rosehill)
Hard to go past this in form galloper from the David Payne yard that is yet to run a poor race since joining the stable. Rock hard fit and can get the job done.
VALUE – VICTORY COMMAND – Race 1 No.5 (Flemington)
A lot of these runners come out of the same race behind the topweight Le Zebra. Reckon this guy hit the line as good as any and I think the rise from 1300m to 1400m will suit him.
Don Harley – TAB.com.au
DOOMBEN CUP – ZAAKI – Race 7 No.1 (Doomben)
Had all beaten bar Giga Kick when first-up this campaign in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes and then scored in the Group 2 A.D Hollindale Stakes in his most recent run. Going great.
GOODWOOD – LOFTY STRIKE – Race 8 No.9 (Morphettville)
Finishing only a length behind star filly In Secret and beating home star sprinter I Wish I Win in the Newmarket Handicap reads very well for this. Looks tough to toss.
BRC SPRINT – SCALLOPINI – Race 8 No.1 (Doomben)
Comes into this first-up off 70 days and is a horse that has benefitted previously from a freshen. Relatively unproven on a heavy track, but has a great record on the soft.
BEST – REDIENER – Race 6 No.5 (Rosehill)
Was $6.50 into $2.70 in relatively no time at all and is the best backed runner across the entire Rosehill program with us. For good reason too as Rediener looks mighty hard to beat.
VALUE – ESTI FENY – Race 9 No.7 (Rosehill)
Scored at big odds to break a lengthy drought to win the Gosford Gold Cup and beat a number of horses that it’ll need to beat again to win the Lord Mayors Cup. Can repeat the dose at a handy price.
Sam Phillips – Sportsbet
DOOMBEN CUP – HUETOR – Race 7 No.3 (Doomben)
Hard to be with Zaaki at the price. Target race, beat Zaaki in the same race last year. Trainers love repeating patterns, there looks to be one here. Worth a bet at the price.
GOODWOOD – ZAPATEO – Race 8 No.7 (Morphettville)
Had a chequered run last start. They should fly along in front here and the Godolphin mare can go back and run over the top of them. Looks the winner.
BRC SPRINT – DARK DESTROYER – Race 8 No.2 (Doomben)
Great roughie up in Brisbane. Nash Rawiller couldn’t be going better at the moment, and the Kiwi’s have produced a strong crop in the last few months. Great play.
BEST – RENAISSANCE WOMAN – Race 9 No.3 (Doomben)
Powered home second-up to get the job done. If the fence is fine by at this point in the day, a positive ride from Josh Parr should have her in the finish.
VALUE – DREAM HOUR – Race 6 No.10 (Rosehill)
Dream Hour wasn’t suited last start. Gets a gun draw along with apprentice Dylan Gibbons on. Can run a race at the double figures currently on offer.
Joshua Bell – Ladbrokes
DOOMBEN CUP – NUMERIAN – Race 7 No.2 (Doomben)
Has been given a freshen up since finishing a few lengths off Dubai Honour in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth. Previous to that he was second in the Australian Cup.
GOODWOOD – ROYAL MERCHANT – Race 8 No.16 (Morphettville)
A progressive filly that is racing very consistently throughout this long prep. Was placed three times in a row before breaking through at Group 2 level last start.
BRC SPRINT – DARK DESTROYER – Race 8 No.2 (Doomben)
Won the Rought Habit this time last year before finishing fourth in the Queensland Derby. Had just one run during the spring in which he scored at Group 1 level beating home La Crique over 1400m.
BEST – SIGH – Race 3 No.9 (Flemington)
Was a dominant winner in a similar race two back before being denied by the barest of margins at this track and distance last start. Looks well placed to record her fourth win from seven starts.
VALUE – DAYTONA BAY – Race 6 No.5 (Flemington)
Has been racing consistently right throughout this prep and was placed in a benchmark 100 last start. Will appreciate the drop back in class and the weight relief the apprentice will give. Great each-way odds.
Kevin Kemp – Pointsbet
DOOMBEN CUP – ZEYREK – Race 7 No.5 (Doomben)
Zeyrek is in career best form, loves the 2000m and likely to get the run of the race just off the speed. Looks an each-way play all day at the current odds on offer.
GOODWOOD – LOFTY STRIKE – Race 8 No.9 (Morphettville)
The only sprinter in this race that carries the true top class tier one sprinting form from the autumn. Looks as good a bet as you will find anywhere in Australia for the day.
BRC SPRINT – COAL CRUSHER – Race 8 No.9 (Doomben)
One of the most improved horses in work. Draws well to position forward, which could be advantageous in this large field that looks to have a long tail.
BEST – BORIS D’ARGENT – Race 9 No.6 (Rosehill)
Former French galloper primed now for his third run here. Was well found in the market last start suggesting the camp knew he had come on from his first-up run at The Valley.
VALUE – FREE WILLED – Race 2 No.6 (Flemington)
Led two starts back when dominating in her maiden win, then up in trip and sat last and unleashed devastating burst to blow them away midweek at Sandown.
Chris Gregory – Playup
DOOMBEN CUP – ZAAKI – Race 7 No.1 (Doomben)
Zaaki stifles the market as an even money favourite and rightly so given his credentials. He goes in as top selection although not a race I’d be overly keen to bet in.
GOODWOOD – LOFTY STRIKE – Race 8 No.9 (Morphettville)
There looks to be plenty of speed up front for him to be able travel into the race strongly at the business end. He brings the best form lines into this and is superbly weighted against his opposition.
BRC SPRINT – COAL CRUSHER– Race 8 No.9 (Doomben)
This is his hardest test to date however his on-pace racing style puts him right in contention. If he can get an easy enough time of it in front he can be in the finish.
BEST – REDIENER – Race 6 No.5 (Rosehill)
Looks the best bet on Saturday after a strong run last time out at Gosford where he just got too far back in the run. Has drawn softly here and with the 3kg claim looks to have his hoof on the till.
VALUE – STARIANNE – Race 5 No.4 (Rosehill)
Back to Benchmark 72 grade here after contesting the Australasian Oaks last time out. Was only beaten two lengths and she looks incredibly well placed. Think $5 is over the odds.
David Mackay – TopSport
DOOMBEN CUP – DUAIS – Race 7 No.11 (Doomben)
After a failed spring campaign I am keeping faith in the star mare from the Ed Cummings yard. Has been trialling well and her best can take this out. Good value as well.
GOODWOOD – SAVATOXL – Race 8 No.3 (Morphettville)
Won this race in 2021 off a similar preparation. Has won both starts this time in and a little lighter this week. Great value at the price for a proven performer.
BRC SPRINT – DARK DESTROYER – Race 8 No.2 (Doomben)
Has been near unsighted since taking out the Group 1 Tarzino Trophy last spring in New Zealand. He has enjoyed racing in Queensland already and can’t let him go around without at the price.
BEST – REDIENER – Race 6 No.5 (Rosehill)
Rattled home last start at Gosford two weeks back, drops back a touch in distance in equal class. Tipping Rediener will prove too strong here and get the job done.
VALUE – STORMY GREY – Race 4 No.5 (Morphettville)
Hard to look past this filly after saluting at the short price at home last time out. Up in class and I think up to the test, definite each-way chance here.
Clint Wallis – Neds
DOOMBEN CUP – ATISHU – Race 7 No.12 (Doomben)
Good run from back in the field first-up in the Emancipation Stakes before a terrific win in the Queen Of The Turf. Like her stepping up to 2000m and the likelihood of the sting being out of the track.
GOODWOOD – ANOTHER AWARD – Race 8 No.17 (Morphettville)
Was back at the tail of the field from a wide draw in the Robert Sangster Stakes before charging home for second. Drawn better this week so should be able to settle a little closer.
BRC SPRINT – KIKU – Race 8 No.8 (Doomben)
Slowly away when resuming and had little luck in the straight so forgiving of that run as she should have finished much closer. Has an excellent second-up record and handles all conditions.
BEST – GOLDEN BOOM – Race 5 No.4 (Doomben)
Stuck on well first-up in the Mick Dittman after getting caught wide throughout. Has been given a little freshen up after that and has won a trial in very comfortable fashion.
VALUE – SAFEWORK – Race 2 No.5 (Doomben)
Was three wide without cover fresh and thought hung on well to finish fifth. Got held up in the straight last start and should have finished closer to the winner.
Zach Littman – Bet Nation
DOOMBEN CUP – ZAAKI – Race 7 No.1 (Doomben)
Third-up, steps out to the 2000m and has James McDonald in the saddle. Was a tough win last start in the Hollindale after sitting three-wide for the majority of the trip.
GOODWOOD – KALLOS – Race 8 No.4 (Morphettville)
The four-year old Kallos looks to be a horse on the rise. Has won all three starts this prep and his turn of foot continues to impress. Has drawn to get a run just behind the speed.
BRC SPRINT – SCALLOPINI – Race 8 No.1 (Doomben)
The Queenslander Scallopini has had some early support upon his return to the races, which is a positive sign. Expect him to push forward from barrier 11 and settle close to the speed.
BEST – DAZZLING LUCY – Race 9 No.4 (Flemington)
This mare is as consistent as they come. She was nosed out at Sandown first-up after settling back in the field and only seeing clear air at the 200m. The bigger track on Saturday suits.
VALUE – CHERRY TORTONI – Race 8 No.2 (Flemington)
Forgive his first two runs of this preparation. The step out to 1600m at Flemington with Laura Lafferty claiming 3kg are all positives for Cherry Tortoni, and you’re getting a price.
James Thomas – Palmerbet
DOOMBEN CUP – ZAAKI – Race 7 No.1 (Doomben)
Solid first-up effort behind Giga Kick in the All Aged Stakes before holding them off last start to take out the Hollindale. The margin wasn’t big but he was trapped wide early and make to work.
GOODWOOD – KALLOS – Race 8 No.4 (Morphettville)
Winning form is good form and he has won three in a row. He has stepped up to the plate each time out and deserves his crack at Group 1 level here. He has drawn well and Ben Melham sticks with him.
BRC SPRINT – KIKU – Race 8 No.8 (Doomben)
Has not been in stellar form and she has drawn wide but she has won twice at Group 2 level previously and James McDonald takes the ride. She has never missed a place when racing second-up.
BEST – BORIS D’ARGENT – Race 9 No.6 (Rosehill)
Solid third last start after taking off a long way from home and racing three wide. He just peaked on his run the last 50m so the drop back to 2000m will suit him.
VALUE – PESHMERGA – Race 6 No.3 (Rosehill)
Was not sure to expect at her debut run in Australia but she showed great gate speed to take up the running. She didn’t get much peace after that but still fought on well for fourth.
Matthew Steed – Bet365
DOOMBEN CUP – PALMETTO – Race 7 No.9 (Doomben)
Love the way he is going about his business this preparation winning his last two in fine style. Obviously facing his acid test here but still looks like there is improvement to come.
GOODWOOD – ZAPATEO – Race 8 No.7 (Morphettville)
Has been flying this preparation with two Group 2 wins before being placed behind Ruthless Dame last start. Obviously harder now and the gate is no spoil but just needs a touch of luck.
BRC SPRINT – BACCHANALIA – Race 8 No.12 (Doomben)
Comes here in peak form after being narrowly edged out in the Takeover Target at Gosford last start. Drawn to get the perfect run and if he gets the breaks at the right time, he should be in the finish.
BEST – REDIENER – Race 6 No.5 (Rosehill)
Certainly caught the eye at Gosford last start when giving away too much start. Looks in career best form at the moment and may be able to settle a tad closer from the better gate here.
VALUE – VIADELAMORE – Race 7 No.11 (Rosehill)
Improved run last start when beaten by a smart one. Even fitter for this and the step up to 2400m should suit. The wide draw is not ideal but think he looks set for a peak run and worth a play at the juicy odds.
