The South Burnett Thrashers continued their winning streak, downing the Toowoomba Bears 34-19 at Southern Cross Oval in Toowoomba on Saturday.
“This was the first game that we packed full contested scrums,” club president Jamie Shirlaw said.
“Given the promotion to B Grade this year, Downs Rugby allowed us a few games to train our forward pack to scrummage safely. Scrums in C Grade are uncontested.
“The forward pack looked very solid at training on Wednesday night but there were nerves going into the match having not contested scrums.”
Club vice-president Jason Lee said the team scrummaged well, and didn’t lose a scrum all game.
“The team started well scoring four tries in the first half,” Jason said.
“In the second half, the Bears dominated possession but again our big forwards finished the game in style.
“We finished the game with a late try and penalty kick at the death of the game.
“It was great to see the team get off to a strong start in the game as there have been a few games this season where the team is slow to start then finishes strong in the second half.
“After the game the team took their post game singing to a new level with both teams in the one huddle singing the Fijian hymn, ‘Oqo Na Noqu Masu’, together.”
The Thrashers will be back in Toowoomba next Saturday, facing the Condamine Cods at USQ.
