“Chevalier” – (PG-13; 1 hour, 47 minutes) – Inspired by the incredible true story of composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges. The illegitimate son of an African slave and a French plantation owner, Bologne (Kelvin Harrison Jr. in a tour de force performance) rises to improbable heights in French society as a celebrated violinist-composer and fencer, complete with an ill-fated love affair and a falling out with Marie Antoinette (Lucy Boynton) and her court. Join host Susie Arnold, PhD, of the Island Institute as she welcomes special guests Nichole Price, PhD, and Liz MacDonald, for a discussion on The Superpowers of Seaweed! Learn from ocean scientists and Maine sea farmers about kelp’s amazing impacts in the economic and environmental health of our coastal communities. Maine is currently the largest producer of kelp in the United States, with farms located along our entire coastline. Thursday, June 15 at 7 p.m.
“You Hurt My Feelings” – (R; 1 hour, 33 minutes) – Beth (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), a popular writer, and her husband Don, a well-liked teacher, share the kind of relationship that truly, seriously, for the love of God cannot be real: that is, they’re actually in love. Even after decades of marriage, parenting, and their own successful careers, their physical spark has somehow not diminished. But when Beth discovers that Don has been untruthful to her about his opinion of her work for years — Beth’s world comes crashing down. Has their whole relationship been one big fat lie? Screening Friday, June 16 and Saturday, June 17 at 2 and 7 p.m.; Sunday, June 18 at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 21 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.; and Thursday, June 22 at 2 and 7 p.m.
Production Designer Sally Levi joins us for a post screening talkback following the Wednesday, June 21 screening. Levi went to Art Center College of Design and Lund University. She splits her time between New York, Los Angeles, and Maine. Levi is known for her films “Yes, God, Yes” (2019 SXSW), “Amend” (Netflix 2021), “Egg” (2018 Tribeca), “It Comes At Night” (2017), and “Patti Cake$” (2017 Sundance, Cannes).
“At The River” – (2 hours) – Free – Lincoln Theater and Skidompha Library’s Chats With Champions is pleased to welcome filmmaker Carolyn Crowder for a free screening of her documentary film, followed by a post-screening talkback. 2023 MidCoast Film Festival – Friday, June 23 and Saturday, June 24 – Tickets and passes are on sale now for the 4th annual – celebrating the films of New England! Join us as we screen documentaries, narratives, and short films all by New England filmmakers, filmed in New England, or about New England. Filmmakers will be in attendance for talkbacks following all programs!
This season we are offering five different programs with a total of 18 films – Our kick-off is the feature documentary: “Stafford,” playing Friday, June 23 at 7 p.m.; “On the Water,” plays Saturday, June 24 at 11 a.m and the Maine Narrative Shorts Program at 1 p.m. and The Locals Only Shorts Program, is plays at 3 p.m. Closing out the Festival, the ever-popular New England Based Stories Shorts Program, which plays Saturday the 24th at 6 p.m. More information, passes, and tickets, are available online in advance and at the door.
