Use a word like village or neighbourhood, and one usually pictures quaint low-rises with trees. Well, in the foreground of this image by UrbanToronto Forum contributor smably, that’s just what we have — low-rises with trees — and in fact, they are part of the ‘village’ under construction in behind, Mirvish Village, a new mostly rental residential mixed-use development at Bathurst and Bloor in Toronto, that transforms the lands of the former Honest Ed’s discount department store and the funky original Mirvish Village shopping street through its west side. The new Mirvish Village uses a more modern application of the word village, going far denser and taller, and as it heads towards its opening, we’ll soon know how much of the original funk remains, and whether all the new buildings offer a modern village feel when full of new residents, retailers, services, and open space. There’s a lot of promise here, and in a few months time we’ll hope to see that start to be fulfilled.
