LOS ANGELES — Pack your bags, grab your passport and let’s go to Italy for a bachelorette trip.
That’s the premise for “Book Club: The Next Chapter,” which finds Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen teaming up again.
The film, which opened in theaters on Mother’s Day weekend, follows the four best friends as they take their book club to Italy for a fun girls’ trip.
When things go off the rails, their relaxing vacation turns into an Italian cross-country adventure.
Screenwriters Bill Holderman and Erin Simms joined Spectrum News to discuss the next chapter of “Book Club” and what working with the four brilliant actresses was like.
“They are so much fun to be around. There is so much life force inside those four, they are hilarious,” said Holderman.
“It is also the talent. The commitment. They take themselves just as seriously as when they were starting out their careers. That is very inspiring to see,” Simms told Spectrum News.
The sequel to “The Book Club” was an idea that came to be in 2018 on a flight to CinemaCon, before the first film even came out.
The four actresses were on a flight with Simms when they decided they wanted to do a sequel, and they wanted to do it in Italy. The first movie performed well, and “the next thing you know, we were on a flight to Italy,” said Simms.
What do they hope people will take away from the film?
“I hope we inspire people to think outside of the box,” said Simms.
The film also stars Andy Garcia, Don Johnson, Craig T. Nelson, Giancarlo Giannini, Vincent Riotta, and Hugh Quarshie.
