QAFL colts: Meet the Super 8 who led Labrador’s season first win – plus best players across a round, including in the Redland-Victoria Point’s thriller and the Cats arm wrestle win.
Labrador, fielding three 15-year-olds, prevailed 10-10 to 8-4 over Noosa, inching ahead late in a gripping encounter.

In round 8’s results
Maroochydore 6.7-43 lost to Wilston Grange 8.13-61
Mt Gravatt had a local derby with Sherwood but lost 6-15-51 to 4-4-28.
Redland Victoria Point claimed a thriller, 7.3-45 to Aspley’s 44.
Broadbeach found the winners post over gritty Morningside, 9-7-61 to 6-7-43
Palm Beach Currumbin 14-9-93 to Surfers Paradise 3-5-23
Labrador broke through for a home win, 10-10 to 8-4 over Noosa
In a mighty team performance, Labrador had a super 5 players in particular who spearheaded its way to victory.
Cody Davis: The midfielder was under every pack winning the footy and worked hard to get to every contest.
Mason Field: Another mid whose damaging running both ways was a feature, as was his continual delivery of inside 50s.
Jack Turner: The backman who never stops was rewarded for all his efforts this season by singing the club’s victory son. “He just stops his player every week and is great in the air,’’ praised Tigers coach Rob Yoannidis.
Zach De Simone: Another backman whose great marking ability aided the team’s push for victory. “He reads the game well all day and is a great rebound,’’ coach Rob Yoannidis said.
Alex Phyland: The Labrador forward worked up the ground and took some strong marks overhead.
Plus, Labrador had three Tiger cubs, 15-year-oolds Mick Marimowa, Zody Bradshaw and Jayden De Simone.
Zach’s young brother Jayden played forward and displayed composure to twice kick goals, while Bradshaw also got on the score sheet with a major playing forward.
The slick Marimowa impacted the match as a wingman.
Labrador turned a five points three quarter time lead into a three goal victory.
Labrador coach Rob Yoannidis was as proud as punch to see the W, with three 15-year-olds involved in the win.
THE OTHER MATCHES:
Palm Beach Currumbin v Surfers Paradise
PBC set the match up with a strong first half performance which denied Surfers, restricting them to just two behinds.
The match included 17 year old eligible players Ryan Davis, Thomas Grimster, Beau Lester-Sutherland.
Broadbeach v Morningside
The Cats had to come from behind entering the final term and finished with a flourish, booting 4-3 to ease away from stubborn Panthers.
This was after Bryce Longland (three goals) led his side to the brink of an upset.
Jack Jovanovic also kicked three for the winners.
“It was a team effort. Everyone played their role and with so many new faces it was a gutsy win,’’ praised Broadbeach coach Lewis Chiodo.
Morningside coach Ross Anderson said he had plenty of fine players, who included:
Bryce Longland and Tom Southon: Longland up forward created a contest all game while Southon as a back and mid worked hard and made a difference in the contest.
Tanner Griffiths: Tanner was superb in the backline and had a great use of the ball.
Harry Taylor and Joey Wilson: Wilson and Taylor was tireless all day and competitive in the contests.
Wilston Grange v Maroochydore
Wilston Grange’s Jack Frewster kicked three goals in his team’s exciting win over the Roos.
The difference in the game was basically the first quarter when the Gorillas kicked 2-6 to 0-2.
“It was a great team effort as we had eight regulars out this week,’’ said Wilston Grange coach Darren Fazldeen.
“I am super proud of the effort because Maroochydore were always hard to play against.
Wilston Grange’s line-up include Jack Thompson, Roos Noah Johnston and Angus Harry – all under 17 players.

Best for the Gorillas: Duncan McCabe: He was clean at the stoppages and dangerous up forward.
Rigby Wilson: He played strongly in a shut down role.
Jack Fewster: Jack was powerful up forward and hard to stop.
Hayden Rainbow and Marcus Zip: Rainbow was excellent rebounding while Zip dominated the ruck and kicked a goal
Roos coach Jason McDonald said his side struggled, and it was difficult to find a player who won their position.
“But we wee well served by Tyler Whitely who moved through the forward line in his rotations. “He took some strong contested marks and has a strong body one-on-one,’’ McDonald praised.
Redland Victoria Point v Aspley
The match of the round was the Sharks one point win over the Hornets after the sides went neck and neck across the four quarters.
Aspley paid the price for not kicking straight, but credit to the winners for their tenacious effort to hang in tough.
Sharks best: Sam Catlow Elliott: He played in the ruck and provided his side with a lot of drive out of the middle.
Harrison Sala: A midfield player with a big engine, he just never stopped competing. That is his trademark.
Raph Geesu: He was a midfield player who was strong with his defensive tackles and damaging with his offensive efforts.
Aspley’s best included three Div 1 under 17 players – Duncan Lewis, Jake Howson and Milo Presland-Tack
Sherwood v Mt Gravatt
The vital third quarter was where Sherwood best responded after Mt Gravatt had taken a led into the long break.
The Magpies kicked 4-4, while curbing the Vultures, keeping them to just two behinds in this period.
Indeed Sherwood’s second half shut-out restricted Mt Gravatt to three behinds.
Zack Bidgood was a focal point with three goals for Sherwood.
“All the boys put in a great team performance after we lost two key players early in the first quarter,’’ praised Mt Gravatt coach David Greenaway.
“Our pressure throughout the day was impressive and something to be proud of against quality opposition.’’
Best players for Mt Gravatt: Connor Lambert: The ruckman competed all day, rarely losing a hit out. His hard work paid off with him kicking a major in the third quarter.
Jett Green: The wingman was an elite runner who was able to provide the link between Mt Gravatt’s backs and forwards. His work rate was amazing.
Kyne McDonald and Kieran Micheletti: Both midfield boys for Mt Gravatt, they toiled hard all day and had plenty of winning contests.
