The General Havelock, affectionately known as the ‘Havey’, has undergone a stunning million-dollar renovation in celebration of its 150th birthday.
The iconic pub, located on Hutt Street, has reopened its doors after extensive restorations to bring back its former glory. This refurbishment is part of Penny Hospitality’s larger plan to revitalize Hutt Street as a thriving hospitality hub.
Hugo Pedler, Director of Penny Hospitality, expressed excitement about acquiring the pub and re-energizing the precinct.
“We’ve collaborated with some of Adelaide’s finest craftsmen to restore the front bar, balcony, and upstairs area,” said Hugo.
The front bar has been lovingly restored to capture the classic pub atmosphere, providing patrons with a warm and inviting ambiance. The upstairs area has also been renovated, featuring a heritage balcony boasting a breathtaking 270-degree view of Hutt Street, complete with cityscapes and leafy trees.
“The new upstairs area has a fantastic vibe and offers supreme comfort no matter the weather. With ample heaters, cozy couches, and a pool table, it’s the perfect spot for friends to gather on wintry nights,” added Hugo.
In the summertime, guests can enjoy refreshing drinks on the breezy balcony. The bar staff will serve everything from Aperol Spritzes to cold tap beers, catering to everyone’s preferences.
Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the redesigned Beer Garden, which now offers booth seating, a massive 4.5-meter TV, a wide selection of tap beers, and Saturday DJs. The upstairs area, balcony, and beer garden are all available for private functions.
To celebrate the reopening, the Havey is offering attractive drink specials during the opening weekend, including $3 champagnes, $5 espresso martinis, and $6 base spirits.
The wine list has been thoughtfully curated to complement the venue’s dynamic atmosphere, featuring renowned South Australian wineries like Riesling Freak from the Barossa Valley, Gemtree Wines from McLaren Vale, and Shaw and Smith from the Adelaide Hills.
The revamped menu introduces exciting new dishes alongside beloved pub classics, marking a new era for the Havey as a bistro pub.
Head Chef Billy Preace expressed pride in using local produce and catering to various dietary requirements. Patrons can enjoy irresistible food specials throughout the week, such as $10 schnitzels on Mondays, $15 pastas on Tuesdays, $25 steaks on Wednesdays, and $15 burgers on Thursdays.
The General Havelock is open Monday to Thursday from 11 am until late, and on Fridays and Saturdays until 1 am.
Hugo Pedler enthusiastically shared, “We can’t wait to present the Havelock at its finest, reflecting the heyday of Australian pubs with excellent food, top-notch service, and an exceptional wine list. The Havelock will once again become the heart and soul of Hutt Street.”
