Terry Crews was the top vote getter in a poll conducted by Elon Musk asking for the next Snow White.
Famed Twitter CEO and emerald mine profiteer Elon Musk has been on his usual meme-sharing schedule this week, dropping a number of images and videos via his Twitter feed ranging from the groan-worthy and cringe to the genuinely funny and thought-provoking. One such tweet displays a recent poll asking who fans would like to see portraying Snow White in future adaptations of the character, with Ana De Armas, Rachel Zegler, Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot, and Terry Crews filling out the potential options. To great humorous effect, Terry Crews has the support of over 93 percent of the voting public, leaving the remaining candidates left with only 6 percent spread out between them.
The Amazing Spider-Man filmmaker Marc Webb is currently set to helm an upcoming reimagining of the Snow White character which is set to arrive in 2024 according to IMDb. Though the film has already cast Rachel Zegler in the titular role, with Gal Gadot credited as the evil queen, Disney may want to rethink their casting strategy in order to garner more fanfare for the upcoming film. With nearly all of the voting public throwing their full-fledged support behind Terry Crews, it could be an excellent PR move to cast him in the film, even in a minor role.
Obviously, part of the reason the general public selected Terry Crews for this role is due to his physical incongruities with the character of Snow White. Throughout most iterations of the character, Snow White is a small-framed, young, white little girl, described as having black hair, red lips, and skin as white as snow by the magical mirror on her wall. Terry Crews, by comparison, is a hulking 6″2′, 245-pound, bald black gentleman best known for his work in a number of hyper-masculine roles.
Of course, when he isn’t playing an overtly masculine meat-head in Old Spice commercials or President Camacho in 2006’s Idiocracy, Terry Crews sometimes opts to play against-type as a gentle giant, such as his pop-song-loving character Latrell Spencer in 2004’s White Chicks, or as Terry, the yogurt-loving family man in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. To that end, a Snow White film starring a heavily wigged, costumed, and made-up Crews in the leading role, played completely straight, could serve as a hilarious piece of avant-garde art perfect for a Gen-Z audience. This concept could even work similar to Bob Odenkirk’s leading performance in the upcoming remake of the hit so-bad-it’s-good film The Room.
However, if we look past the many humorous reasons why fans may have voted to have Terry Crews take on the role, some genuine reasons also rear their head. For starters, Crews has shown his emotional depth and acting range in films like I’m Sorry To Bother You, as well as his tenure in television series’ such as Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Everybody Hates Chris. Additionally, the star has garnered a great deal of support for his many appearances guest-hosting daytime shows such as The Talk, Entertainment Tonight, and America’s Got Talent, putting his likability on full display for millions of viewers.
While the image presented in the Tweet was clearly meant to be a joke, we shouldn’t be so quick to write off Terry Crews as the titular protagonist in an upcoming Snow White film. Though he may not fit the visual description of the character as we currently know her, perhaps a top-down reboot could take the IP to new heights.
