On Sunday 28 May 2023, over fifty boys from twelve different Sunday Schools across Sydney and Wollongong gathered to compete in the Sunday School Sports Championship.
After beginning the day with prayer, the boys were encouraged by Fr Panteleimon from the Church of St Gerasimos Leichhardt, to give it their all in the upcoming games and remember the importance of the bonds formed in Sunday School.
The boys then split into their teams and squared off against each other in three separate sports: soccer, ultimate frisbee and dodgeball.
After three tightly contested rounds, they took a short break from competing and gathered around to listen to Fr Sophrony from the Church of the Holy Cross in Wollongong, who spoke about the value of athleticism and likened the spiritual struggle to the sporting endeavors that the boys were undertaking.
The day culminated in the grand final between the Parishes of the Resurrection of our Lord Kogarah and the combined alliance of All Saints Belmore – St Catherine Mascot. Despite the herculean efforts of both teams, there could only be one winner. With just a few minutes left in the game, Kogarah fired home the winning and only goal of the match to be crowned the High School Boys Sunday School Champions of 2023!
We would like to express our thanks to all who attended, supported and took part. Ultimately, days like this are a reminder of the joy and enthusiasm that springs forth from true Christian fellowship and of the importance of the relationships formed in the Sunday Schools of our churches. Glory to God for what was an amazing day.
