Carrick Swan’s young players of the future were given a central role in the weekend of celebrations to mark the official opening of the GAA club’s €1m Páirc na nEalaí grounds.
A day of juvenile GAA matches was hosted at the Swan Club’s state-of-the-art playing grounds on the Ballyrichard Road in Carrick-on-Suir on Saturday, April 29.
It was an apt prelude to the official opening of the grounds carried out by GAA President Larry McCarthy the following day.
The celebrations also included a blessing of the grounds by Bishop of Waterford & Lismore Most Rev Alphonsus Cullinan on Friday, April 28.
The Bishop also celebrated Mass there with local priests and club members
Swan GAA Club PRO Niall Walsh said the club has a large juvenile section and their underage teams played hurling, camogie and football matches at the official opening weekend competitions day.
First on the field were the U-9 hurlers who played Kilsheelan and Grangemockler/Ballyneale. The U-11 hurling team played Cahir in a Go Games match.
Players from the club’s other underage groups were divided into teams and played each other.
In the evening, there was “mixed” matches between the club’s Junior A and B hurling teams and two teams picked from among the Junior camogie squad.
There was a festive atmosphere at Páirc na nEalaí for the enjoyable day of juvenile and junior matches.
There were goody bags of treats for the young players along with face painting and DJ Dwane Fogarty provided music entertainment for the players and spectators.
