The Downing Centre courthouse had been evacuated over a bomb threat after the arrival of a “suspicious package” had been uncovered, with police quickly arriving onto the scene.
Lawyers, staff and members of the public were ordered to evacuate to Hyde Park by the sheriffs at Downing Centre around 10 am Friday 2nd June. Those who were inside were informed that a potential bomb threat was the reason for the evacuation.
NSW Police has stated that “following reports that a suspicious package was located in the complex,” there was a “police operation is under way at Downing Centre.”
An exclusion zone was established, with the shut down of Elizabeth, Goulburn and Liverpool streets.
Package Declared Safe
However, specialist officers have declared the mysterious package as safe and that there is “no risk to the public.”
“The exclusion zone is being lifted and roads are being reopened. Police would like to thank the community for their patience and cooperation,” a spokesperson for NSW Police told City Hub.
“Investigations are underway into the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
According to a report by the Sydney Morning Herald, sources inside the centre stated that the package had been discovered at the ground floor reception area prior to the evacuation order.
