The Gold Coast SUNS are taking the lead – literally – joining Animal Welfare League Queensland (AWLQ) for Take Your Dog to Work Day.
The annual event on Friday, 23 June, celebrates the bond between man and man’s best friend while also shining a light on animal adoption.
“Take Your Dog to Work Day can offer positive benefits for employee productivity and well-being. Although our workplace is anything but ordinary, we are excited to embrace the day and support such a worthy cause as Animal Welfare League Queensland,” GC SUNS defender Darcy Macpherson said.
“I first become a dog dad in 2020 when I met my American bulldog Floyd, and we’ve been inseparable ever since. He’s such an important part of my life and he helps me switch off from football, so I’m incredibly thankful to have Floyd in my life.”
Studies show that four-legged co-workers can improve staff morale and performance and provide mental health benefits.
“Henry is my three-year-old red heeler-cross-staghound, I actually picked him up from the Animal Welfare in Geelong and he’s my best mate,” GC SUNS forward James Tsitas said.
“He gives you purpose. You come home from a big day and he has needs as well, you need to take him for a walk and get out of the house. Coming down to the park with the sun shining, seeing all the other dogs playing and having fun, it’s pretty hard to be in a bad mood.
“He’s just a bundle of joy, always happy to see me and I just love him.”
AWLQ spokesperson Craig Montgomery said the day would also serve as a reminder that not every animal is lucky enough to have a mum or dad to spend the day with.
“Across our Brisbane, Ipswich and Gold Coast Animal Rehoming Centres, stray and homeless dogs are looking for their forever homes,” he said.
“AWLQ is committed to improving the welfare of animals across Queensland, and this event aligns perfectly with its mission. By participating in Take Your Dog To Work Day, we hope to raise awareness about pet adoption and encourage potential pet owners to consider giving a loving home to an animal in need.
“The day not only promises to be a lot of fun for anyone who gets involved, but there are also the added health benefits of having a canine companion in the workplace.
