SUNS Academy prospect Jed Walter opened his U18 National Championships campaign in sparkling fashion as the Allies defeated South Australia in the Championships opener on Sunday.
Featuring three SUNS Academy members, the Allies led from the start kicking six goals to two in the opening quarter before running out 16-point winners.
Walter started the game like a house on fire, taking numerous contested marks and kicking two of his three goals before quarter time. The key forward had opportunities to kick more but was pivotal in securing a strong start for the Allies.
In midfield, Ethan Read and Jed Walter were creating chaos and stamping their authority on the contest.
Read had his work cut out for him against a strong SA ruck combination, but had plenty of impact across the ground, showing off his superb mobility and getting involved regularly in general play to finish with 18 disposals.
Rogers, who last month won the Academy Medal for best-on-field against Carlton’s VFL side, was elusive and clean as ever in midfield. Known for his evasiveness in traffic, the 18-year-old proved too much for South Australia’s on-ballers and had plenty of impact throughout the day.
The Allies next face Western Australia this Sunday at Thebarton Oval. First bounce is 12.35pm QLD time with the match live streamed on the AFL website.
