Southern Cross’ Goldfields Brewing Company has won a bronze award for its Sticky Beak beer at the Western Australian Brewing Association beer competition.
The beer was created by the brewing company in partnership with Limestone Coast Brewing.
Brewer Geoff Munday told the Kalgoorlie Miner the beer was an India Pale Lager which was clean and crisp, where no flavour was added to the beer, whereas an IPA had a combination of hop flavour and yeast.
“An IPL is a form of lager, which is much higher in malt content so it’s a much stronger tasting beer and it has seven different hops, New Zealand and Australian hops, which give it a really nice citrus pineapple type passionfruit type aroma on the nose,” he said.
Mr Munday said the beer was originally made at the Goldfields Brewing Co. in April 2022 and had been available at the Club Hotel since it opened.
“The four brewers sat around and we debate the recipe and the merits of the different hops, the use of the malts, and actually we managed to crack it the first time which was very surprising,” he said.
“It was one of the most popular beers when the place first opened, which speaks volumes.”
In regards to the competition, Mr Munday said he had forgotten about it until right before the deadline to enter.
“We entered eight beers and we got medals for all eight and it was a case of we just took them out of the fridge in our tap room and entered them,” he said.
“Whereas a lot of breweries will actually spend months leading up to it, planning and brewing the freshest possible beer just before the contest to send in the very best beer we didn’t do that. We in fact almost missed it.”
Mr Munday said the can entered featured the logos of both companies to put a spotlight on the collaboration and promote the Goldfields Brewing Co. in Perth.
He said judges noted Sticky Beak had a deep golden colour, notes of bubblegum and mojito on the nose, with a fresh and enjoyable hoppy flavour which could be made more bitter.
Mr Munday said he was looking forward to entering more beers from the Goldfields Brewing Co. into next year’s competition.
