MERIDIAN — This time around, Post Falls senior Annastasia Peters’ effort was second to none in the 3,200.
Peters, who has signed with Utah to run track and field and cross country, won the state 5A girls 3,200-meter run in 10 minutes, 42.92 seconds Friday at Mountain View High after finishing runner-up in the event last year.
“I kind of went into it not being too focused on a time outcome and just wanted to have fun and do my best,” said Peters, who won the state 5A cross country girls race in October at Lewiston Orchards. “Being a state champion is just the cherry on top. I just wanted to put my best effort out there, and I think I did that today.”
Peters won the race by almost 11 seconds. She credited her family and teammates for helping her stretch the advantage.
“I knew I had a lead, but not much of one,” Peters said. “At state, anything can happen. I was just trying to keep myself engaged in the race. When everyone is cheering you on, it really pushes you in the last mile of the race. It was great to have so many people here since we’re six hours from home. It definitely helped with a group effort today.”
Peters will try to add a title in the 1,600 today after finishing third last year.
For Post Falls senior Trevor Miller, Friday’s win in the shot put wasn’t unexpected.
In fact …
“I’d worked for it all year,” Miller said. “I just went out and got what I deserved.”
Miller won the state 5A boys shot put title with a throw of 57 feet, 3 ¼ inches.
It was the first time Miller has placed at state in the event.
“This year, coming in knowing I was the No. 1 seed, I just had the mentality and confidence to act like it,” Miller said. “Knowing that really changed my mindset going in.”
Miller will try for a second title for the weekend as he competes in the discus today.
“I’m just looking to make one fly tomorrow,” said Miller, who has committed to play football at Idaho as a preferred walk-on. “There’s definitely some relief by winning the shot, but I’m still hungry for another title.”
Post Falls senior Capri Sims was second in the girls shot put, Coeur d’Alene sophomore Kelsey Carroll fourth. Trojan sophomore Trenton McLean and junior Alex Shields tied for fifth in the boys long jump.
Coeur d’Alene sophomore Max Cervi-Skinner was sixth in the 3,200. The Viking boys 4×800 relay placed third, and the girls 4×800 relay was seventh.
Boise is leading both meets after the first day.
Meets in all five classifications conclude today.

MERIDIAN — With only one jump left, Lakeland sophomore Ziya Munyer knew what was at stake.
Either be special, or go home with second place.
She was special.
Munyer claimed the state 4A girls triple jump title at 37 feet, 3 ¾ inches, beating Canyon Ridge freshman Hailey Elliott, who was second at 37-1.
“Coming into the meet, I knew the girl that was second was only a couple of inches off my mark,” said Munyer, who was the top seed in the event. “In the finals, I went after her and knew I had to go big.”
Munyer’s dad, Jacob, is her jumps coach.
“When I got out of the sand, my dad knew it was a big jump,” Munyer said. “I knew it was going to be really close and when I found out, I was shocked. It was a really good last jump for me.”
Munyer added the work her and her father put into the event helped as well.
“We map out each of the phases of the jump,” Munyer said. “Once he saw that my second jump was further than my personal best, he knew I had it. He just gave me a look and I knew he was excited.”
As for the final jump …
“We work a lot on the runway and my dad knows I’ve got a lot of power,” Munyer said. “I just needed to pop at the end and was able to do that.”
Ziya’s mom, Berenice, was unable to attend, but knew what had happened with Ziya’s event.
“We’ve got a few trips coming up and she wasn’t able to come this weekend,” Munyer said. “It’s her birthday this weekend and one of my friends had sent her the video. When I got done, she texted me and told me to call her right now.”
Lakeland senior Preston Jeffs was fourth in the discus.
Bishop Kelly (boys) and Pocatello (girls) lead after the first day.

Coeur d’Alene Charter senior McKenna Kozeluh paced the competition, running to the 3,200 title in 10 minute, 56.73 seconds at Middleton High.

Timberlake’s boys sprint medley team finished third, and Coeur d’Alene Charter was sixth.
Bonners Ferry junior Asha Abubakari won the shot put, discus and was runner-up in the long jump, helping guide the Badgers to the first-day lead in the team scoring with 46 points.
