Businesses with a payroll of over $10m plus Victorians with multiple properties will be hit with new taxes.
Treasurer Tim Pallas said the state government needs to pay back the $30 billion that was borrowed during the peak of the pandemic.
“When it hit Victoria, we acted quickly,” he said.
“On the advice of the Reserve Bank of Australia we borrowed billions of dollars to prevent economic scarring.
“Some did better out of the pandemic than others and it’s only fair that those who did well contribute to the repayment effort.”
From a Geelong perspective there was continued investment in schools and health, with money confirmed for the Geelong Women’s and Children’s Hospital, plus planning money for secondary schools at Armstrong Creek and Mount Duneed.
Labor Member for Lara Ella George said there will be an $11m investment into the You Yangs and Serendip Sanctuary.
“This funding will improve the visitor experience and protect these special places for generations to come,” Ms. George said.
“Over 470,000 people visit the You Yangs and Serendip Sanctuary annually.
“These upgrades will ensure a great experience for everyone visiting whether it is for bushwalking, hiking, mountain bike riding or to experience nature.
“Today’s State Budget and the $11 million investment recognises the significance of these places, whether it is for local families who enjoy the great outdoors, our Traditional Owners for whom this area is so important, or for tourists who visit our beautiful region.”
Some other key local election promises to receive funded included:
– Torquay Bowls Club, with $40,000 towards planning for a third green.
– A $67 million investment to upgrade 12 schools including in Geelong.
– $60,000 to Anglesea Community House.
– $800,000 to upgrade Torquay Fisherman’s boat ramp.
– $7.26m in 2023-24 for ambulance station at Armstrong Creek.
– Investment of up to $36 million for the Gordon TAFE Disability Services.
– $800,000 ($200,000 a year over four years) for Pako Festa
– $2m for female friendly facilities at North Shore Sports Club
– $7.55m for a new gym at Western Heights College
– $50,000 for upgrades at the Islamic Society of Geelong
