About the opportunity
The Staff Engineer is responsible for coordinating the operations and staff of a specific discipline, equipment and/or facility (“Technical Area”). This includes ensuring the Technical Area meets educational/research needs and objectives of its users by providing sustainable high quality and professional services. The Staff Engineer will provide sound, expert advice, supervision, guidance and technical support to researchers and students using the Technical Area, working closely with researchers and key educators, and providing collaborative research input for projects being undertaken. They are a point of contact for University of Sydney’s researchers for the Technical Area. The role also ensures that the relevant Work, Health and Safety standards of the work area are met and are aligned to the University’s WHS policy and relevant legislation.
The Staff Engineer provides specialist knowledge of new technology, trends, and techniques relevant to the Technical Area and will effectively communicate them to relevant stakeholders. They continue to develop their skills to positively affect their ability to work and interact with others while continually work on delivering strategic objectives at the local level.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
- provide operational support to Wind Tunnel, Fluids Laboratory and Combustion Laboratory facilities, including meeting the needs and objectives of its users in a sustainable manner
- provide expert advice, sound technical research support and assistance to Wind Tunnel, Fluids Laboratory, and Combustion laboratory facilities users
- ensure that the Wind Tunnel, Fluids and Combustion laboratory facilities systems, reporting, and documentation requirements are met, including governance and ethics reporting
- lead the implementation of service improvements, service excellence and operational efficiencies within the responsibility area
- plan and manage the effective utilisation of resources within the designated area of responsibility, in alignment with the TSS overall strategy and objectives
- champion best practice workplace health and safety and compliance
- identify and mitigate risk, including emergency response in the responsibility area.
About you:
- a relevant engineering degree (e.g., Mechatronics, Aeronautical, Mechanical, or Space) qualification
- experience in designing, implementing and supporting experiments in wind tunnel, fluid combustion or other engineering laboratories, OR equivalent industry experience, including some of: instrumentation engineering, electronics design, mechanical design, software for system control, data logging systems, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), high power laser use
- ability to establish and maintain working relationships with stakeholders, ability to maintain strong working relationships and to work collaboratively with other staff to support required organisational outcomes
- keen attention to detail and awareness of issues related to dealing with commercially sensitive or confidential information
- experience in managing laboratory and workshop facilities, including experience in demonstrating experiments and using specialised equipment/apparatus
- experience with developing research projects, experimental design and preparing ethics submissions and grant applications
- experience in optimising protocols, developing research projects, experimental design
- ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that may arise as part of normal daily work
- excellent time and workload management skills with demonstrated ability to prioritise effectively, manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and achieve required outcomes
- sound working knowledge and acute awareness of safety regulations and operating procedures within the laboratory environment including experience in working with hazardous substances with well-rounded experience in implementing safety procedures relevant to the laboratory
- experience in a makerspace or prototyping space is desirable but not required.
