Doug Penner of the Steinbach Fly-In golf club, Les Forbes of Quarry Oaks and Dan Lamy of La Broquerie Golf play their opening round matches today at Golf Manitoba’s Provincial Match Play Championships at the Glendale Golf & Country Club in Winnipeg. Penner will face Troy Kehler of Elmhurst in the men’s division. Forbes will meet Karl Schroeder of Rossmere and Lamy will take on Garth Collings of Breezy Bend in the senior men’s division. The winners advance to the round of 16. Kate Gregoire of Quarry Oaks will play Saturday in the women’s quarterfinals.
The Zone 13 champion SRSS Sabres meet the Swan Valley Tigers today at 9 a.m. and the Garden Valley Zodiacs at 2 p.m. in Glenboro in their two round robin games at the Provincial High School Baseball Championship. La Broquerie’s Ecole St. Joachim Braves, who earned a wildcard spot on Monday, will face Boissevain at 4:30 p.m. and the William Morton Warriors of Gladstone Friday at 11:30 a.m. in Baldur. The top two teams in each of the four Pools advance to the quarterfinals.
The Carillon Sultans gave up four runs in the second and seventh innings and lost 11-6 to the Pembina Valley Orioles Wednesday night in Ile des Chenes. Rylan Penner had three hits and Ryan Powers had two rbi for the Sultans who committed five errors and saw their record fall to 3-5. Chris Tetrault got the start for Carillon and allowed five hits and three earned runs. He struck out eight Orioles and walked five. The Sultans are idle until Sunday when they play a doubleheader against the defending Manitoba Junior Baseball League champion Elmwood Giants at Koskie Field.
The Winnipeg Goldeyes dropped a 3-2 decision to the Chicago Dogs in Rosemont, Illinois. Jackson Smith homered for the Fish who hit into four double plays. Winnipeg third baseman Dayson Croes had a pair of singles and extended his hitting streak to 14 games.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers walkthrough is scheduled from noon until 1 p.m. today. The Blue Bombers play their final pre-season game Friday night against the Saskatchewan Roughriders at IG Field. On Wednesday the football team added receiver/returner Janarion Grant to the roster from the suspended list.
